Review

'a fascinating fantasy world'

(School Librarian )

'The first of six rumbustious adventures, it enjoys Blytonesque jollities and gorgeous grotesques drawn by Ted Dewan.'

(Amanda Craig, The Times )

'Sophie Masson is decidedly a captivating narrator who certainly knows how to hypnotise her readers.' (Lollipops )

'Reading one of Sophie Masson's books is like standing on top of a lonely mountain at midnight, under a star-filled sky ... Her work has that same sense of clarity, magic and mystery ...' (Garth Nix )

'One of the strengths of Masson's work is this creation of parallel worlds of fantasy which interweave with the old folk tale but also produce echoes of myth.' (Australian Book Review )

CARABAS: 'A sophisticated and timeless tale of magic and human nature.' (Weekend Australian )

THE TEMPESTOUS VOYAGE OF HOPEWELL SHAKESPEARE: 'Masterly' (The Times )

CLEMENTINE: 'A fabulous novel ...' (Adele Geras )

Blytonesque jollities and gorgeous grotesques drawn by Ted Dewan.

(The Times )

'The descriptions of the fantastic (literally) shops and people Tom finds are delightful and his adventures when plunges into nightmares are exciting.'

(Newbury Weekly News )

Product Description

Everyone thinks 10-year-old Thomas Trew is weird: neighbours, other kids, even his own dad. Thomas doesn't really mind. It's been like that ever since he can remember. Then one day there's a dwarf in his house, and his life changes for ever. Thomas is summoned to the Hidden World - a magical place responsible for dreams, music, and imagination in the Obvious World (the human world). Extraordinary adventures await Thomas and his shape-shifter friends, caught up in the unpredictable rivalries between the different races of this world. He soon discovers his true talents and emerges as a Rymer, able to take his place as a link between the worlds of imagination and magic and the everyday. Thomas comes to understand both, and his 'weirdness' becomes greatness indeed. (20061123)

A great read! 15 Dec 2006
By THT
Format:Hardcover
My son finds reading Harry Potter too dificult but enjoys these type of magical stories very much. Thomas Trew is pitched just right for the younger reader with enough excitment to keep them hooked (I didn't see him for hours at a time!)but aimed at younger readers he had no difficulty. Like all great books this is just one of a series so now we have to wait for 2007 to find out what happens next in Thomas' adventures. A lovely book with great illustrations, your child will get lost as they enter the 'Hidden world' we would very much reccomend it.

A Magical Read 19 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
Young Thomas Trew lives quite an ordinary life - even though he's not quite an ordinary boy. All his life he's been able to see and hear things - and people - that no-one else can see or hear. Even his hardworking, harried, father, Gareth, thinks he's a little weird. But when Angelica Eyebright and Adverse Camber of the Hidden People, Middler Country,, Owlchurch Branch, pay Thomas and his father a visit, and Thomas discovers that he's a Rymer - able to travel between the Hidden and the Obvious Worlds - it's quite clear that from now on his life will be far from ordinary.

Thomas and Gareth are transported to the Hidden World in order to protect him from an evil that threatens to destroy both worlds - andThomas finds himself in the midst of the most marvellous adventure.

In this first in her Thomas Trew series, author Sophie Masson has woven yet another magical tale: one that's full of wonder, suspense and humour, and with a cast of the most intriguing characters. It's a tale that's sure to keep the young (and old!) reader completely spellbound - and eager to join Thomas in his next adventure!
