Product Description

Review

'In this concise study, Page has given Hardy's readers an admirable and sensible point of reference to all the works. In his own brief account of Hardy's life and career he is direct and matter of fact. The reader of this book will find he has a reliable guide and a provocative guide.' - Tribune

'The great virtue of this book is that it is written in a transparently clear and always readable style. As a handbook to Hardy it will be of great value to the student who wishes to be a given a map not only of the major novels but, but the lesser known ones as well, and of the poetry, The Dynasts, and the miscellaneous prose writings ... if the chief qualifications of a guide are intimate knowledge of the country and soundness of judgement, all who want leading through Wessex will find Professor Page a reliable and responsible guide. ' - British Book News

'This is one of the best post-war Hardy books' - Notes and Queries

'Page's Thomas Hardy is an uncommonly good and lively introduction to its subject.' - Year's Work in English Studies

--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Wonderful 3 Nov 2011
By Asma
Format:Paperback
I only discovered Hardy's poetry recently and I am glad I did! I have read many of his novels and diving into his poetry was wonderful as the themes, concepts and language that Hardy uses is truly magical. He has written poetry about a wide range of themes and topics which is apparent in this book. Although some poems are a little difficult to understand, a little research soon clears up any confusion and really helps to analyse his poetry. Although a small selection it is a very good representation of Hardy's poems and to understand the autobiographical elements in his poetry.

Unexpected reminder 5 April 2009
Format:Paperback
Forget the costume drama image, Thomas Hardy is more than a set text novelist. His poetry is wonderful sensual language that washes through your soul. The poet gets to the heart of the mans convergence with the forces of nature so much better than a dozen hours of Kate Winslett and Leondardo di Caprio. The book costs next to nothing, the words seep through to the soul pretty much instantly. Found these poems whilst babysitting for a niece. Now I have the book!
