Product Description

Product Description

Thomas Hardy was shy to a fault. He surrounded his house, Max Gate, with a dense curtain of trees, shunned publicity and investigative reporters, and when visitors arrived unexpectedly he slipped quietly out of the back door in order to avoid them. Furthermore, following the death of his first wife Emma, he burnt, page by page, a book-length manuscript of hers entitled "What I think of my husband", together with letters, notebooks, and diaries - both his and hers. This behaviour of Hardy's therefore begs the question: did he have something to hide, and if so, did this 'something' relate to his relationship with Emma? "Thomas Hardy: Behind the Mask" pierces the veil of secrecy which Hardy deliberately drew over his life, to find out why his life was so filled with anguish, and to discover how this led to the creation of some of the finest novels and poems in the English language.

About the Author

There can be little about Thomas Hardy's life that is not covered in this wide-ranging book, which includes extensive quotes from his poems as well as the storylines of his novels. So much of Hardy's writing was influenced by the pain of his loveless marriage with Emma, and the author searches widely in his quest to understand her distressing attitude. The author of this most interesting book puts forward hereditary instability as the root cause of Emma's refusal to consummate the marriage and her frequently hostile relationship with her husband, and he illustrates this theory with similar instability among her family members.

An easy explanation 4 April 2011
Format:Hardcover
Well written and largely conjecture, there is an easy explanation that the author seems to have omitted but understandably so. Hardy, genius that he was, probably foresaw the idiots that would be taking over his house and instead of treating it with respect as a historical place, charged admission to visitors so they could see the occupant's TV set, their cheap furniture, and their other manifestations of poor taste. Hardy could envision the silly idolatry of the Thomas Hardy Society and it is no wonder he ran for cover! It is a great credit to the author that he can still muster up some angle on Hardy that hasn't already been exploited to the nth degree. Too bad no Hardy scholar can get young readers interested in his work which has become the domain of oldsters.
