Well written and largely conjecture, there is an easy explanation that the author seems to have omitted but understandably so. Hardy, genius that he was, probably foresaw the idiots that would be taking over his house and instead of treating it with respect as a historical place, charged admission to visitors so they could see the occupant's TV set, their cheap furniture, and their other manifestations of poor taste. Hardy could envision the silly idolatry of the Thomas Hardy Society and it is no wonder he ran for cover! It is a great credit to the author that he can still muster up some angle on Hardy that hasn't already been exploited to the nth degree. Too bad no Hardy scholar can get young readers interested in his work which has become the domain of oldsters.
