Product Description

Book Description

A brilliant new historical novel by the acclaimed author of The Temple of Optimism.

Product Description

Thomas Gage is a happy man. He has a fine house in Norfolk, two delightful children, a wife who brought with her a nice income from her father's paint firm, a Waterloo medal (he fought in the battle when he was nineteen), and a painting on show at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Then, a few months after Thomas Gage's fiftieth birthday, Julius Gooby enters his life. Mr Gooby is a man of the future, manager of the proposed North Norfolk Railway from Norwich to Cromer, and the route of the railway crosses Gage's land. With the railway comes tragedy, and Thomas Gage's life begins to unravel until, at the end, medal on his chest, he travels to London to watch the Duke of Wellington's funeral and to take his revenge. In Thomas Gage James Fleming has fashioned another historical fiction of the very first rank, a portrait of a good man undone by grief, by others' greed and, ultimately, by progress. (20031208)

This is the best work of historical fiction I have ever read.
One is immediatly captivated by the daily life of Gage,Farmer, accomplished amateur artist and ex-soldier. All these elements combine into a tale of pathos and humour with one of the most starkly haunting scenes of a man's extreme reactions to an incredible series of events ever put into print.
If you are an aficionado or newcomer to historical fiction this is the book for you. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. BRILLIANCE .BRILLIANCE

A powerful and gripping novel of change, progress and ruin in the nineteenth century. Leads on from the themes of middlemarch but with greater psychological depth. I gave my copy of this wonderful book away and now I regret it.

This is not a biography of Thomas Gage 30 Sep 2008

This is the description on the back of the book. "Thomas Gage is a happy man. With Thomas Gage, James Fleming has fashioned another historical fiction of the very first rank, a portrait of a good man undone by grief, by others' greed and, ultimately, by progress"

I will be honest and say after receiving the book I have not read it, as I thought I was purchasing a book on General Thomas Gage, commander of England's North American forces until 1775. So my review has nothing to do with the quality of the writing, but since this has no description, I wanted other to avoid the mistake I made assuming this was a biography.
