Product Description

Product Description

Aimed at the 3-8 age group, this innovative book applies the Haynes treatment to one of the most popular children's characters. Inspired by the world-famous Haynes manuals, this book explains how Thomas works, how his driver operates him, and how the engineers of the Sodor railway keep him in tip-top condition. Some of Thomas' friends also feature, with Henry's overhaul, for example, offering the chance for young readers to see how a steam engine is taken apart and refitted. This brightly designed book will delight children and parents alike.

An engaging little book using the "Haynes Manual" title, but NOT the format.
Not very logically laid out, nor in a friendly format for children.Nevertheless, it has some nice cutaway drawings and fits in well with the rest of the Thomas books. I felt that this was an opportunity missed to make an educational introduction to engineering for youngsters. As it stands it's just an amusing alternative to the usual run of Christmas 'annuals', but for that purpose I would still recommend it.

This is a great little book for Thomas fans, as well as being a fun book it's also pretty informative...

The front cover of this owner's guide made me laugh with the classic Hayne's Guide styling, I'm sure it will catch many a parents eye and make them smile too. The contents of the book doesn't follow the same technical level of detail as a Hayne's manual - but you wouldn't expect that in a childrens book!

The Thomas owners annual give brief overviews of some of Thomas' friends such as their jobs in Sodor and how many wheels they have. It doesn't mention all of the trains but the familiar old ones are there. As well as little fact about the trains the book contains information about how trains work and contains diagrams (including cross sections) to show the inner workings of a steam engine.

In a nutshell: This makes a nice change to the usual Christmas Annual and it's a bit different - instead of stories and puzzles you get an insight into the working life of the trains in Sodor and it should help to further a childs understanding of the technology behind the engines. It is quite a thin book though, there aren't many pages - but it still manages to stimulate interest. It would be nice to see a bigger version of this book which acts as a nice companion to the TV series.

This book is aimed at 3-8 year old kids. With that said - I think it'll appeal more to the lower end of that scale. My son (3 years old) certainly enjoys reading through it repeatedly - but I think that the older end of the spectrum will absorb the information and become bored with repeated readings.

There are cut-away drawings of Thomas, Gordon, Percy, Mavis, George and Harold with annotations and a paragraph of text. Each of the trains is a slightly different model and there is some really nice simple info about them e.g. Thomas is a "Tank Engine" because he has his water tanks built-in, whereas Gordon has his water and coal in the "Tender" that he pulls. It's all simple stuff but perfectly pitched for my 3 year old.

As well as the cut-aways there are simplified drawings of how a steam engine works, the controls inside the cab plus pages on both engine maintenance and construction. There's a double page spread on Henry and how his defective firebox problem was solved, four pages on the other engines/vehicles on Sodor (pictures with one or two lines of text), a little bit on track/signals and 2 pages on old and new engines (again, mostly pictures with minimal text). With the introduction, a railway facts page and a glossary - that about covers the whole book (40 pages).

All in all I think its great. It has big, colourful and simple drawings, minimal text delivering simple facts and has a nice quality feel to it. It has already given a lot of pleasure to my son - and that surely is the acid test?
