Review

From Grace Thomas Dybdahl Last Suppa Something To Die For Fiona Culley STAB Just like buses we wait ages for a Norwegian act to come along and get us excited and then two come along at once! 36 million sales + A-Ha are back and sounding better than ever and looking just as handsome! We find it hard to believe that next year will be the 25th anniversary of their debut album Hunting High And Low. Morten Harket s distinctive voice sounds like it has been locked in a preservation chamber. Foot Of The Mountain is a hit in any era and a credit to the songwriting skills of Magne F and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy who are living proof that form is temporary but class is permanent. The track ticks all the boxes; melody, synth hooks and strong lyrics which bodes well for the forthcoming album. A-Ha received the Q Inspiration award last year and we think they ll be picking up a few more awards yet. Catch them on tour in the UK in November. Our favourite performance at The Great Escape in Brighton came from Norwegian Thomas Dybdahl. We first saw Thomas perform in Austin, Texas at SXSW over 2 years ago and were keen to see him again and he has got even better live. Not many Norwegians get compared to Nick Drake and Tim Buckley but Thomas more than lives up to the comparison. Thomas has made 4 albums in the past 7 years and the UK will be the launch-pad for a collation of the best tracks from those on the forthcoming eponymously named Thomas Dybdahl album on August 3. He certainly has an inexhaustible gift for poignant and tender songwriting. His last 2 albums both went platinum and got to #1 in his native homeland. From Grace will be just one of many beautifully well crafted and intimate songs on the forthcoming album as well as one of the tracks on his B A Part EP which comes out next month. Norway, Douze points! --Billboard Magazine

About the Artist

Thomas Dybdahl - www.thomasdybdahl.com - www.myspace.com/tdybdahl Norwegian Grammy Award ( Spellemannprisen ) and Alternative Award ( Alarm ) winner, 29-year old Thomas Dybdahl, is one of the most talented singer-/songwriters to emerge from the Norwegian music scene. He has received rave reviews for his October trilogy + new album Science. NPR has said of Dybdahl, His delicate but lush music recalls that of Tim Buckley, Nick Drake and other forward-thinking songwriters. And Jon Pareles of The New York Times recently wrote of Dybdahl s under-discovered 2006 U.S. debut One Day You Will Dance For Me, New York City, Thomas Dybdahl writes songs that move in for extreme close-ups: his acoustic guitar, his breathy voice, his vows of love. He's Norwegian, but he sings in English. ...the tempos are glacial and the instruments few and pristine, so that every gesture is exposed. Anything less than total grace would turn precious and cloying, but Mr. Dybdahl maintains his poise; each song has the delicate suspense of a drawn breath. Discography albums: - ...that great October sound (2002, Platinum) - Stray Dogs (2003, Gold) - One day you ll dance for me, New York City (2004, Platinum) - The National Bank (2004, Platinum with the band The National Bank) - Science (2006, Gold). - Come on over to the other Side (2008, Gold with the band The National Bank) In short: The debut album ...that great October sound was released in October 2002. The album includes 11 songs and was practically written, produced, played and recorded by Thomas Dybdahl himself. Most of the tracks were conceived in New York, autumn 2001. On this trip he collaborated with Mike Daly (Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams), Edie Kuhnle (Cat & Edie) and PK (Boots) Ottestad (Getaway People, Robbie Williams). The result is a melancholic stroke of genius which is easy on the ears and introspective without succumbing to platitudes and naïveté. Dybdahl is known to be an extraordinary artist, vocalist, guitarist and songwriter. The second album, Stray Dogs , was released October 2003. Once again the reviews were overwhelming, the tours sold out and the album and singles off the album did great. He was nominated for two prices at both the Norwegian Grammy Award and the alternative Grammy again that year. In addition his video for the single Cecilia was nominated in both awards. His third album, One Day You ll dance For Me, New York City , completed his planned October Trilogy and was released in October 2004. The album went straight to # 1 at the official album charts and quikcly sold to Platinum. In 2006 Thomas Dybdahl released his fourth album, Science which also won him a Norwegian Grammy. The album artwork boasts some notable names with celebrity designer (and vocal Dybdahl supporter) Philippe Starck providing the graphic art direction and famed lens-man Jean-Baptiste Mondino (Madonna, David Bowie, Björk) providing the photographic art for the CD. All albums are mastered by Scott Hull (Miles Davies, Uncle Tupelo, Bruce Springsteen, etc) in Classic Sound Studio, New York. Thomas Dybdahl is currently recording his fifth album due for release in 2009. At the same time he s writing and recording the score music for the Norwegian film Rottenetter ( Rat nights ) due August 2009. Directed by Arild Omundsen (Mongoland, Monster Thursday). Official sales charts: ...that great October sound peaked at number 8 on the official album charts. Stray Dogs peaked at number 6 One day you ll dance for me, New York City went straight to number 1 Science went straight to number 1 as well The albums have spent well over a year at the official sales chart in Norway by now. Awards: Spellemannprisen 2002 (The Norwegian Grammy Award) for best Pop artist Alarmprisen 2002 (Alternative Grammy)
