From Amazon.co.uk

Thomas, as anyone familiar with the eponymous, wildly popular TV series knows, is a very useful engine, and never more so than in his first theatrical release, which was a modest box-office success. On a tank filled with little more than pluck, determination and goodwill, Thomas sets out full-steam ahead on a danger-fraught mission to help his friend Mr Conductor. The conductor's stash of magic gold dust has run out, leaving him stranded on the Island of Sodor with Junior, his flaky cousin, and Lily, a little girl enlisted to lift her grandfather out of a funk on nearby Muffle Mountain. When Thomas bravely chugs beyond his hometown tracks' buffers with Lily aboard, he's transported to Muffle Mountain's secret railway and to Lady, a long-lost steamer whose legendary engine makes her more powerful than Diesel, the train-yard bully. Together, Thomas and Lady lead Diesel on a chase that causes a bridge to collapse, taking the dastardly Diesel down with it. Most impressive about the movie is its marquee names: Alec Baldwin works magic as the dutiful worrywart Mr Conductor, Mara Wilson is Lily and Peter Fonda plays the cool-looking but lugubrious Grandpa. It's a cast that will keep put-upon parents watching, if half-heartedly. Thomas fans of five years and under, meanwhile, will wish the actors wouldn't blow so much hot air; they will want to see their hero a bigger part in steaming up the storyline. --Tammy La Gorce

3.0 out of 5 stars Like having an out of body experience 18 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Our two year old thinks this film is great. Older critics are more divided. We love this film for all the wrong reasons. Not since Alice Through the Looking Glass has there ever been such a bizarre and surreal experience puporting to be entertainment for children.
What were the casting company thinking of? Alec Baldwin as Mr Conductor? (Who?) He was so embarrassed in most scenes he couldn't even look into the camera. Who was the weird Scottish cousin, and more importantly, why? Did we really see Peter Fonda playing a grandfather - and as if within seconds he was about to swallow the pills, throw the noose, slit the wrists or - if all else failed - jump right under Diesel 10? No man has ever given such a depressed, never mind depressing, performance before, surely? He must have been kidding. Please.
This film has nothing to do with Thomas the Tank Engine, nor The Rev W Awdry. What a wasted opportunity for the kids. Oh but what a feast of hilarity for parents! Bunuel eat your heart out!

1.0 out of 5 stars Thomas has been Derailed!!! 16 Jun 2001

Children's hero Thomas the Tank Engine Steams into Hollywood. Oh hurrah. Jump for joy. How very exciting. Wake up parents. Your kids may love Thomas, but will they love this movie? you wonder. Well, First of all, most of the trains have american accents and the only ones that don't are Thomas, the cousin and the big engine, Gordon. The TV series and books are great. But the movie is plotless and dull... P.S The Fat Controller is not in the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great movie for little Thomas Fans 28 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
My daughter is almost 4 years old and a huge Thomas Fan. I first rented this movie about a year ago at our local video store. She loved it so much, I had to rent it over and over again, all throughout the last few months, until I finally decided to buy it. It is definitely worth the money for all the little Thomas Fans out there. My daughter sure loves this movie above all the other Thomas-tapes she has :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Remember its for kids! 11 July 2003

Format:VHS Tape
I have seen bad reviews for this film written mostly by middle aged men. My two young children adore the film and all the music, If you are aged between 2 and 6 then this is a great movie.

Well where do I start. Thomas is a gr8 long standing classic loved by all, what did the americans do with it!! Like they always do with ideas they buy change everything about it so it's not what they bought in the first place. The voices are all wrong, wrong, wrong, Alec Baldwin (altough I like him as an actor usually) hams it up far to much, there's no real story, they mad Diesiel ten into this really evil engiene (guess thats cause in america they don't understand grey areas everything has to b either good or bad no in between), Peter Fonda looked embarresed to be in it, initially we thought our Son liked it as while me and t hubby sat constantly cringing our son sat and watched it all. But he now has gone from Diesil ten being his fav engine to him being frieghtened of him and if we suggest to put the film on he looks in horror saying no no no (so kids do have taste). Pleased i never spent my own money on it as it was a present but don't know what to do with it as I wouldn't even give it away.Unless I don't like them!!

4.0 out of 5 stars love it! 20 April 2009
Format:DVD
I have to say its not the best film i've seen but my 3 year old LOVES it! It's not got a great story line thats got much to do with thomas really but if you take it on face value and who its targeted at then they have gone a brilliant job. I had bought a Lady train for my son and he never looked at it until this movie, now he sets his train set up and has his diesel 10 chasing thomas and lady! So to sum up dont expect too much and after all its for the kids, not us over critical grumpy grown ups!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Thomas and the career-ending gobbledegook. 27 April 2003
Format:VHS Tape
I know this film is designed for four year olds. What I didn't realise was that it was scripted by four year olds.
Throughout this nonsensical movie (you need to watch it several times to figure out the plot(s) - or to be precise try and make them make sense, the plot is trivial) characters appear, disappear, play with trains a bit, throw magic gold dust around and wave bye-bye to lovable Thomas at the same time as their acting careers. Welcome to the world of TV movies Alec Baldwin.
The most entertaining bit is a throwback to the old TV game show 3-2-1. It had incomprehensible riddles that Einstein would have struggled with. And so does this film. "Then watch the swirls that spin so well" for example. Eh ? What ? Maybe it makes sense to a four year old.
Don't buy it. Buy a compilation of the five minute TV shows instead - they are several classes ahead of this idiocy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter Rubbish 9 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
No doubt like any parent out in cyber world reading this your child loves Thomas and all his friends, Britt Alcroft has made a bomb out of me with all the die cast toys, puzzles, videos etc, And yes Im sad to say it I have purchased a copy of this film as my son loves it, I will excuse him being five years old, he does not know he and my money are being swept along a commercial railway here. This film is terrible, the plot is so strange no one knows what is going on, on set. Peter Fonda should not carry the "Fonda" surname and throughout has a "I just read the lines attitude" Alec Baldwin, I so hope you did this film for your kids and no other reason. Even the voices of the trains are terrible, look for the part where "Lady" first talks. Done by a voice over actor who had no idea of the story, film or the fact she was a train. The only saving grace was Mr Conductors cousin who acted like he wanted to be there. But as a parent Thomas is on the front and we have to buy it. Britt you can have commercial sucess and a story line which dosnt leave parents cold, learn some leasons from Toy Story, as the next time you release a follow up it could be the end of the road for your gravy train, even kids want a plot they can follow.
