'As a story-teller, Jenkins has few equals' Tribune

Product Description

Within the severe and depressed slums of Drumsagart, rife with unemployment and discontent, the members of Thistle cling to their game as an escape. And when they actually start winning, a momentum grows up in the community around them, as they come to represent ambition and hope. The Holy Grail of football, the Scottish Junior Cup, glitters at the end of a string of matches and suddenly the entire town of Drumsagart is depending on it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Black humour, social satire and philosophy too, 27 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Robin Jenkins' The Thistle and the Grail is one of the few successful attempts to transfer football into fiction, and possibly not just the best football novel ever, but one of the best books about football in any genre.
Set in the drab town of Drumsagart in post-war Lanarkshire, it follows the fortunes of Scottish Junior side Drumsagart Thistle and its road to the Junior Cup Final. Mainly, though, it follows the people in the town who support the club, from its affluent but f*cked-up President all the way down to the unemployed and the alcoholised on its terraces. It also follows those in the town who despise football, such as the bastard copper Sergeant Elvan; the town's fresh-faced new minister who thinks he can convert the masses away from the depravities of sport back into his church; and most of the women folk too.
Loads of black humour, social satire, philosophical asides, engaging plot twists and roundly sketched characters. Brilliant stuff...
