At last 4 Oct 2011

Mark's two albums with Capitol, when they knew he was great but didn't have a clue as to what to do with him. They first tried a hip image and hip album for the hip crowd, such as hung out with Hef at the Mansion, and that didn't quite work. So on the second album they kept him in a jazz position but doing contemporary pop songs in a pitch for a wider audience and sales. No luck, and he was off to Riverside. At that point he became a purely jazz artist and legend and so much for the hit parade. The Grammys never noticed him much but then the Grammys never noticed Chris Connor much either or Anita O'Day or until late in her career Nancy Wilson. Which is why no one significant even cares about the Grammys. I loved these two Capitol albums when they came out, never stopped listening to them and they are still great and off-beat. The cover artist is the same person who did the cover for June Christy's remembering Stan Kenton album.

Early Mark Murphy 19 Mar 2012

This is a great album from the 50's, and it sounds like the 50's.
Mark is awesome, of course, but he became even more so as the years went by.
However, if you are looking for some good old fashioned real music, you'll love this one.

I used to own it on vinyl (guess I still do in a box somewhere), but I'm SO grateful to have it in CD format.

Mark Murphy can do no wrong to my ears.He is the consummate jazz singer.I find it impossible to do any thing but listen when one of his recordings is playing.I saw him twice in Sydneey Australia and am proud to have his autograph.

Even though this is old, I have the original vinyl and was glad to see it available in electronic format. This is my favorite Mark Murphy recording complete with some Steve Allen tunes.
