5.0 out of 5 stars Makes Novel Writing Simple, 25 Mar 2008
By Professor Donald Mitchell "Jesus Makes Me a P... (Boston) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
I've been trying to get up my nerve to write a novel, but it seems hopelessly difficult. I end up being discouraged after reading most books about writing fiction.

I had a different reaction to this book. I felt encouraged. Why? Mr. Mosley describes a writing process that's strikingly similar to how I write my non-fiction books. Whew!

Writing is mostly about re-writing. New novelists often don't realize that and invest too much in emotion and angst into trying to create the great American novel in the first draft. As Walter Mosley points out, the main value of a first draft is to figure out what your story might become. I thought that this book was the best I have read to make that important point.

Mr. Mosley is also excellent at being open to those who like to write as it comes to them as well as to those who use a more structured plan to writing. He is also scrupulously careful to stay neutral between the choices.

I've read many books that discuss the pros and cons of different voices you can use, and Mr. Mosley makes it simpler and shorter than others.

What I liked most about the book was the encouragement to read poetry to develop a style that's spare but powerful. I often read my non-fiction writing aloud to see how well it compares to poetry, but I don't read much poetry. I'll change that after reading this book.

I agree with Mr. Mosley that you have to keep writing to be successful. That hones your skill and keeps your subconscious mind working on your problems. I was interested in his view that you should have a schedule of a fixed time for writing. I've always used a daily word quota. When I start my next book, I think I'll try his approach.

Mr. Mosley also enriches us with detailed examples of the points he wants to share. I was impressed by how well written the examples are.

5.0 out of 5 stars A short, tightly written gem..., 4 Jul 2008
By Mary C "NurseMare" (NJ, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This short, 111 page book breaks down the writing process into simple, well defined segments. Mr. Mosely goes from beginning your novel and establishing a writing routine all the way to the revision of your first draft.

Sprinkled throughout this book are little gems. My favorite was in the beginning where he likens writing a novel to taking a journey by boat and says, "if you allow yourself to drift, you will never make it to the destination." The book is full of these gems, which, when you read the book, make perfect sense.

The most valuable part of this book to me was the revision process. Since I've just finished the first draft of my novel, it's time for me to begin the revision process. This book gave me excellent advice and a path to follow.

This book is full of indispensible advice. It goes straight to the point. It leaves you feeling encouraged. It would be a great addition to any writer's bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and practical simplicity, 7 Mar 2009
By Mark Treacher (Gloucestershire, England) - See all my reviews
This short book of only 110 pages is perhaps one of the most encouraging writing books I have read to date (and I've read quite a few). It's not one of those highly formulaic books that show you the way to write a bestseller. Instead, it is a simple informative and encouraging guide to getting started.

Walter Mosley provides some of the best advice on narrative voice I have read. In fact he provides the reader with a good coverage of all the areas a writer needs to know about. His style is that of a friendly, personal and encouraging narrative. His advice to write every day no matter what is the soundest.

If you are looking for a highly structured How To manual then this is not the book for you. Walter Mosley's book offers friendly advice and guidance in the manner ofa wise old sage.
