Review

Praise for the Asham Short-Story Collections: 'The writing is top quality, regardless of the individual authors' fame, and there's something here for everyone' Glamour 'One of the most pleasurable aspects of this anthology is its combining of excellent new stories alongside the work of newcomers' The Times 'A timely reminder of the bite-sized pleasures to be tasted and savoured in glittering glimpses of love, loss and dry cleaning' Independent 'An impressive and masterfully edited collection of short stories ... Like a top-notch issue of Granta, this collection is imbued with the edgy zeal and conviction that makes new writers worth reading' Irish Times

Product Description

This is a dazzling, witty and richly varied collection of short stories, which includes contributions by six much-loved writers - Patricia Duncker, Rachel Cusk, Tessa Hadley, Emily Perkins, Nancy Lee and Kate Pullinger - as well as the twelve brand-new voices of those shortlisted for the Asham Short-Story Award 2007. Asham House in Sussex was once home to Virginia and Leonard Woolf and is the inspiration behind the Asham Award. Launched in 1996 to support and encourage new writers, it is Britain's only prize for short stories by women.

wonderful 31 Oct 2007
If you like short stories this book has everything: wonderful language, powerful images that resonate long after you've finished reading, rich characterisation, convincing diaglogue, startling stings in the tail, pathos, humour, anger and quietness. Alongside the six well known short story writers, we have twelve fresh voices that I for one certainly want to hear more from...

nice collection of short stories, some better than others but all very good. I enjoyed it, particularly nice to take if one is travelling.

Overall I enjoyed the book. I was struck how much "woman as victim" stuff there is about still. Time that women were more positive about themselves. In praise of the newcomers; it was impossible to tell the newcomers from the experienced practitioners. Only one story made me laugh; "Chickens and lettuces" by Katie Barron
