Review As it happens, the episode – turmoil, followed by a slightly flat resolution – handily foreshadows This Is War. It’s an album that should roar into life and bristle with righteous indignation, but instead perpetually plays it safe and consolidates the status quo.
The slow building intro of Escape is a dawdling set up for frontman Jared Leto’s breathy, nondescript vocals to be overtaken by a choir of their fans bellowing the album title in a compressed, overproduced delivery that robs it of any urgency. The seed of their angst has been planted, but it quickly sounds played out and affected.
The squelching electro-pop of first track proper Night of the Hunter comes with more gang vocals, which appear throughout like units neatly dropping off a production line. Lyrics as hackneyed and tautological as its refrain – “Honest to God I will break your heart / Tear you to pieces and rip you apart” – immediately start opening cracks along the thin ice on which they perform their pirouettes.
Elsewhere, the sheen of leadoff single Kings and Queens can’t disguise that it’s a song about the end of humanity that sounds anything but apocalyptic. Several tracks later, on Vox Populi, we’re still getting the ‘include the fans’ sleight of hand underpinning vague angst that reverberates so much there’s no room for any substance, just a stomp-stomp-clap motif that sounds hastily borrowed from Queen’s We Will Rock You.
People who want more of the same will enjoy the bittersweet, saccharine rush of their quiet-loud-quiet delivery as it pops up in blockbuster movies where everything turns out alright in the end, but taken as a whole This Is War sounds like its creators have tried to create a sense of drama and failed, dramatically. --Alistair Lawrence

ALOT better than i expected!,

i know that alot of people hate this band. i became interested in them after appreciating jared's acting, i recommend watching requiem for a dream as it's one of my favourite films. i loved their debut album which is alot more edgy and guitar based than the other two, i particularly recommend oblivion and capricorn. their second album a beautiful lie was a major improvement which still kept the rockiness whilst having a more mainstream feel. even though i loved their previous albums, that doesn't begin to say how i feel about this one. i genuinely think that this is an amazing achievement of the band and i hope that people put aside their prejudices to listen to it. reading the other reviews people seem to think that the 'children's choir' sounds bad, im pretty sure that its not children and is actually a crowd of 30 secs to mars fans, and i think that the use of them makes the album more intimate, 100 suns particularly shows this as i think the crowd make the song more special and genuine. my favourite tracks so far are night of the hunter, this is war and hurricane but rather than just downloading single songs i think that to appreciate it fully you need to buy the album as a whole. my favourite part of this album is the way that each song blends into the next, for example i love night of the hunter but it sounds so much better with escape being played before it. the 80's synths and the classical strings bring a new, exciting direction for the band and i think that jared's voice sounds alot more mature and mainstream - this is in no way a bad thing!some of the music reminds me of angels and airwaves who i love aswell
i definately recommend this album and i hope that people ignore negative opinions that they've previously made about the band to take the time to listen to the album as a whole!

No disappointment here.,

This is War; a long overdue and highly anticipated new album from 30 Seconds to Mars.
And they've really delivered. After hearing the release of Kings and Queens, which I loved instantly, I could see how much they had changed. And after listening to the whole album, I could tell the ones that will make a massive impact (goosebumps are a good indication), and those that will grow on you. Personally, Hurricane and Stranger in a Strange Land really hit the spot. They feel so powerful, and really unique. The fans in the background give Hurricane a great atmosphere. And the music in the beginning of Stranger in a Strange Land can't help but captivate you. I'd say (and this is just my opinion), that the weakest songs that will take time to grow on me(and possibly others) are Vox Populi, Search and Destroy and Alibi. They are in no way 'awful' or 'dull'. Just not memorable when I think about the album. The rest of the songs I haven't mentioned, really add to an extraordinary album. You just have to listen for yourself. Lastly, I truly adore how they've included the fans in a few of the songs, without going over the top. As I previously mentioned, they add a great atmosphere to each song. If you're even considering buying this album, don't think for another second and just buy it. There are songs that you'll love, possibly accompanied by goosebumps, and those that you'll come to love in time.

I will start by saying that this album has to be one of the best, if not THE best album, that I've bought this year. I have listened to it in its entirety 13 times since I got it.
It's gorgeous, fierce, energetic and just totally epic sounding all in one. Jared Leto's awesomely powerful yet beautiful vocals flow effortlessly along with the addictive music beneath it. Just stunning. I'm really, really impressed. Cannot praise this enough. I find I want to listen to it all the time at the moment. 30 Seconds To Mars just get better and better with each release. I love them. And I love this album. I highly recommend it.
