Product Description

Synopsis
This book is a set of reflections and recollections of a driver's 40 plus years in the hard and unforgiving world of the haulage and transport industry. It delves into the methods resorted to, in order to survive and make ends meet for him and his family, in a world where the driver is considered the lowest of the low. There is both humour and pathos and some love and some violence. There are tales of underhand dealings, fiddles and thievery. It tells of times when truck driving was a man's world. Hard relentless toil, long, unsocial hours when there was no power steering and all gearboxes were constant mesh. When roping and sheeting was the norm. When trucking wasn't just a job. It was a way of life. Laurie Driver is the pseudonym of Dennis Burnier Smith who has just recently retired from the haulage industry.

About the Author
Laurie Driver is the pseudonym of Dennis Burnier Smith. He has worked in the haulage and transport business as a driver for 40+ years, working for small independent companies and muli nationals. His experience goes back to the early 60's, driving 3 wheeled Scammells to the 21st century driving all the multi axle big rigs of the day.
He recently retired at 60 years of age and decided to write about the times that he has experienced behind the wheel and share the anecdotes and information with people of a like mind as well as anyone else that enjoys a humourous and informative text that is woven into a story of life on the road.

5.0 out of 5 stars GET BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THIS RUNAWAY SUCCESS!, 11 Aug 2006
By Bill Keeth (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
A work of rare comic genius - and hugely informative about the trucking business in which Dennis Burnier Smith (aka Laurie Driver) spent his working years. The funniest book I've read since Billy Hopkins' OUR KID: refreshingly rude as a seaside postcard; feisty as Bill Naughton's ALFIE, it does for post-1960s Manchester what Brian Hughes' evocative JACKIE BROWN - the MAN, the MYTH, the LEGEND did for the Manchester of the 1920s and '30s! An absolute MUST for any Red- or Blue-blooded Mancunian male - and, I might add, for any go-ahead TV or film producer on the look-out for a worthwhile project very much out of the ordinary.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Truckin' Life, 3 Jul 2006
I have read the above named book and found it to be very entertaining and informative. It is very funny in parts, but humour runs through most of the anecdotal chapters. The informative chapters are quite enlightening. It is one of funniest books that I have read. It may, at first, seem to be of limited appeal, but upon reading I find that this is not so and that this book will appeal to anyone with a sense of humour. A damn fine read
