The author has done amazing job in bringing these two children to life, the story is easy to understand and get into from the word 'GO'.. It's compelling and once you've opened the book you'll find it hard to put back down and usually finish reading it that very day!
I read and enjoyed it as a kid and even more so as an adult.. highly recommended.

brilliant young sci-fi novel - a world undergound, with a rigid education system and no non man-made food - the description of a child eating an orange for the first time after years of substitute substances is unforgettable, as is the depiction of a whole fantasy world, and the strength of freindship at any age...

I read this book when I was a kid and like the other reviewer here, found it unforgettable. I too remember the scene of smelling/tasting an orange for the first time. Boy this brings back some memories!
