5.0 out of 5 stars You will be suprised how great this album is...., 14 Jan 2004
This review is from: This Is the Story (Audio CD)
.... since the late 80's, i always had The Proclaimers down as "the scottish blokes with glasses who sung 'letter from America" and basically that was it. A few years ago i seen this album in a sale and decided to get it for a joke. I was blown away completely. I had bought it to sing along to 'letter to america' for a laugh, but when i played it, realised i had missed out on,no joking, probably one of the top 20 albums easily of all time. Leave whatever predudices you have about these two at the door, they are a classic band and this album isn't a one off - the next 4 albums after this are just as good....

4.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic and loud...., 10 Jul 2003
By Damien Boyd - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I saw this wonderful act in Dublin 1986 supporting the Housemartins. They were as good as any live act I have ever seen since. They believed so much in their own unique sound and they certainly surprised 4,000 Housemartin fanatics. On this album are the main highlights from that very memorable cold October night. 'Misty Blue" is a beautiful, slow love song. "Letter from America" (folk and band version) needs no introduction at this stage...possibly the most poignant tribute to emigration you'll ever hear. "The first attack" is fantastic; the acoustic chords coupled with affecting harmonies.... You'll find yourself singing along, so infectious is it.
My favourite track is "Sky takes the Soul"....if ever a song made you want to take up playing the guitar this is it...a fast song with raw but wonderful lyrics ("it could be tomorrow it could be today when the sky takes the soul, the earth takes the clay") and, yes, those harmonies again..
"The joyful Kilmarnock Blues" even introduces a simple but very effective way of grabbing your attention ...a fast clapping sound...
The band scores well for this album - 4 stars for their honesty, their harmonies, their feel-good music and their inventiveness.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the greatest folk albums of all time.., 24 Jul 2001
Great lyrics, great guitar strumming. Mix of moderately jumpy tunes with some classical folk art...great to drink a pint to and relax on a hot summer night with you best girl at your side and your pup at your feet...drinking old Alex Keith's pub draught...
