Surviving the Dead Volume I: No Easy Hope
Surviving the Dead Volume II: This Shattered Land

Eric Riordan doesn't look for trouble, but trouble has a way of finding him.

Two years have passed since the Outbreak. After joining forces with his friend Gabriel, he has managed to stay alive by fleeing to the peaks of the Appalachian mountains. With supplies running low, and enemies gathering, the two survivors are forced to begin their journey west to Colorado.

Along the way they will find unexpected allies, reunite with old friends, and make deadly new enemies. As difficult as life has been, the most dangerous times lie ahead.

Nothing is ever easy at the end of the world.

A good read and much improved from the last offering
First off this is the second book in a series. I would suggest that if you are thinking of reading this then read the first volume, No Easy Hope (Surviving the Dead) first. The first book is not as good in terms of writing suffered at times from being overly descriptive giving the impression that at times the author was trying to pad. In addition the main character and narrator, Eric, was for me not entirely likable and the others characters were for the most part two dimensional. All in all it's not a bad read but could have done with some polish and more time spent on other characters before being released. The price is reasonable and the book is for the most part an easy read so please don't let the negative comments put you off I just like to give a balanced view were ever possible and on balance I recommend No Easy Hope to fans of the zombie genre.

So far the series has not done anything new with the genre. What we have are classical slow and dumb zombies who roam around in packs trying to hunt the living. In essence the zombies and the world that Cook has created are a little generic. We have good people trying to survive, zombies trying to eat people and bad people preying on the good. The two narrators for this story are Eric and Gabe. Whilst both appeared in the first novel, the narration and most of the story was entirely from Eric's perspective. Perhaps it's because I disliked Eric a little (at times during both the first book and this one I wish someone would punch Eric in the face) but the presence of Gabe and his narration really improves the story telling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! 18 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the first book (No Easy Hope) in this series and expected to enjoy the second. I am pleased to report that it exceeded my expectations, a tremendous story line is developing and I hope that Jim Cook can hold this strength as the tale progresses. This was, for me, an unputdownable (is there such a word) book. Thank God for Kindle as I am downloading the third book as I write this review! For lovers of the Zombie Apocalyptic genre this is a definite cut above the rest and a MUST read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable 1 May 2013

I thought this was a great start to a new series, except now I see that it is in fact the 2nd book in the series! I don't think it mattered though, and it was easy to get straight into this book.I liked the 2 main characters, and some of the others.I didn't like the walkers, they were pretty nasty, just as you'd expect, and I liked the pace of the book. Now that I know this is a series I would like to read the other books, think I'd like to read the next one first to find out whats happening with the characters, good read.

A good follow on from the first book in the series, the author tells a good story and moves things along nicely. I still can't take to the main character Eric who continues to aggravate at times, however we learn more about Gabe who is a far more interesting if flawed character.this adds nicely to the story and is all the better for it
Can't wait for the next book, hope it won't be too long
