More About the Author

Bryony Rheam was born in Kadoma, Zimbabwe, in 1974 and grew up in small mining towns until her family finally moved to Bulawayo. She left Zimbabwe at the age of eighteen and went to the UK, where she worked and studied for seven years. After completing her MA at the University of Kent at Canterbury, she taught in Singapore for a year and then decided to return to Zimbabwe in 2001. At the time, everyone thought she was mad to go back to Zimbabwe when many people were leaving as the country was in political and economic crisis. However, the next few years were to provide inspiration for her debut novel, This September Sun (amaBooks, 2009) and her various short stories. She currently lives in Ndola, Zambia, where she is a part-time English teacher. She is currently working on her second novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story-telling! 18 Sep 2012
By Louise
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book ticked a lot of boxes for me. It is a work of fiction but feels like an autobiography. The historical and political setting give an added layer of complexity and interest. The second part is a real page-turner as the real story unfolds. For me perhaps the most interesting aspect is the way our view of the world changes with age - looking back on her grandmother's life and reading her letters and diary gave such a different perspective than the original one held by the little girl growing up in a complicated family in tumultuous times.......everything can be explained if only we seek the others viewpoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding read 29 Jun 2012
By Ann
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is not my usual type of read and I had no prior knowledge of Bulawayo but from the first chapter I was hooked. I could visualise Ellie and Evelyn, Miles and Wally in my mind so easily and Bryony wrote so eloquently it made me feel all the emotions these people experienced. I would recommend this book as a truly enjoyable read.
So look forward to her next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Evocative Read 30 May 2012
Having grown up in Bulawayo the same time as "Ellie" I loved this book. It is the first time I have read a book and felt it at the same time. I could hear and see so much - Bryony's writing brought my memories alive and I am so pleased to have been reminded about things I once took for granted or had forgotten about. I can now have a quick trip back home whenever I like. I also learnt a lot I didn't know about life in Zim. I would recommend this book without hesitation - to fellow Zimbos abroad or people with links to life in Africa for the trips down memory lane - and certainly to those who want to read something just a little bit different.

Looking forward to the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bulawayo as we knew it 16 Sep 2012

This September SunThis book is excellent! 'Ellie's' experiances were very familiar to me. It was about Bulawayo as we knew it. I often felt I was right there with Ellie on the roads, and in the places and shops which I know the names of.Evelyn`s experiances in her Diary, I think are more common and realistic than people will admit.I loved every page. Thank You Bryony.

4.0 out of 5 stars This september sun 19 July 2012
It was wonderful to read a book about our quirky little town, Bulawayo. It was not violent or political, like so many books written about life here, just a window into real life. Bravo Bryony!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous read! 14 Sep 2012
By Doug
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Reading This September Sun was a very special experience for me. Being born in Bulawayo and having left many years ago, I had forgotten about some aspects of my amazing childhood that was spent there. Bryony's brilliant book brought back so many memories of living there. In fact the relationship I had with my grandmother was very close, like two of the characters and the memories this book reminded me of were truly lovely.

This September Sun is beautifully written and Bryony creates a perfect vision of life in Zimbabwe in different eras. The sense of romance she creates was very pleasing and her descriptive skills are wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will read it again. I am waiting in anticipation for her next novel.

Bravo Bryony!

I found the middle bit of this book better than the beginning or the end. Nevertheless I enjoyed the read. I wish the ending hadn't been so abrupt.
