Amazon Review

One day, a boy accidentally leaves his much-loved teddy bear on a chair in the park. Night falls and the bear's adventure starts when an owl carries him off in its claws. With the help of a passing trombonist, the bear lives to tell the tale, and is happily reunited with his boy the following day.

As the book is written in rhyming couplets, it's easy for young children to join in with the storytelling. And it's a wonderful cautionary tale for anyone who's ever shouted "I don't want to go home. I want to stay in the park forever". (Ages 2 to 5) --Lisa Gee

A Big Book edition is also available. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

"Anyone old enough to be attached to a teddy bear will be enchanted... Sarah Hayes' rhyming couplets work very well, and Helen Craig's illustrations are just right." Wendy Cope, The Daily Telegraph; "For those ready for their first story, there could be no better choice than This is the Bear." Judy Taylor, The Independent

We first borrowed this book from the library. My son refused to let me return it so I had to buy one as it really is his favourite book. He really feels for the bear and the story is just scary enough. The bear is worried, hopeful, brave, scared, assertive, patient, sorrowful, happy, tired and loved all in 24 wonderfully illustrated pages. There is an element of adventure in this book and the other two titles - This is the Bear and This is the Bear and the Picnic Lunch and I would thoroughly recommend all three.

But....don't worry..... there is a 'happy ever after' ending...naturally!

Teddy is left behind, when his forgetful owner leaves him in the park...... and goes on a bit of an adventure! He is there all night.....gets a bit of a fright ....and a little bit wet...........but manages to get back to the chair in the park......eventually!

Large paperback format, 26 pages in the popular two-page spread format, with rhyming couplets.

Superb pastel illustrations throughout, from Helen Craig.

Easy-to-read large text makes this a useful book for beginner readers ..... and this delightful book is further enhanced by speech bubbles and meaningful facial expressions from the various characters.

Main text example:

'This is the owl
who swooped in the night
and gave the bear
a terrible fright.

This is the bear
up in the sky.
This is the owl
who struggled to fly.'

Another wonderful read from Sarah Hayes. The rhyming couplets make it easy for a young child to remember and recite the story, and the illustrations by Helen Craig are superb. The text is bold and clear enough for beginner readers.
Our family have really enjoyed all four 'This is the Bear'books. We love the relationship between the boy and his bear (and that NAUGHTY dog!).Highly recommended.

I bought this book to go with the other two 'Bear' books that I have which my two year old granddaughter loves.
She loves this one too and really enjoys us reading it together. The bear gets left behind in the park, and is picked up by an owl then dropped into the pond where he is rescued by a man with a trombone, taken home and warmed up then returned to the park for the boy to find. The rhythm of the verse is really good, just right for a two year old but I think she will like it when she is older too. Older children with siblings might see something in the dog seeming to be pleased that the bear is left behind, but ending with him being found, this frisson of ambivalence is once again played out (in one of the other books the dog pushes the bear into a bin which is taken to the dump and in the other he steals a picnic from under the bears nose). The illustrations are simple and delightful, and I like the little comments that the characters say - which I think are for the adults reading the story rather than the children. I would highly recommend it - I wish Hayes and Craig would write some more of them!
