I had this book as a child and came looking to get it for my daughter.. She loves it too and tries to count along with the pages, we never tire of the fun 'old men' illustrations through a child's eyes this book gets 5*'s!!

Good book for sharing 29 Aug 2009

With maths, things to spot, colourful pictures, and a lovely rhyme, in one book the children loved it. The only reason I voted 4 instead of 5 was because the ending seemed to be hurried into a couple of pages whereas the rest of the rhyme had each section paged seperately, (such as a page for one, a page for two, etc).

"This old man, he played one, he played knick-knack on my drum". I never understood what a knick-knack was as a child and am non-the-wiser now. However I always loved this catchy rhyme. I bought the book to enhance the singing of the rhyme to my first toddler.

The book is pleasant enough, but I don't feel that the illustrations marry up to the rhyme particularly well. For instance, "This old man, he played two, he played knick-knack on my shoe" is illustrated by a dancing pirate who has a wooden leg! Also, each page has a cut-out hole and the number of holes, and the pictures that you see through them don't have much of a bearing on the rhyme or the number in question.

There are better nursery-rhyme books out there and better board books with holes (my favourite is "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly").
