Book Description

30 Aug 2012

WINNER of the Irish Book Awards Children’s Book of the Year 2012 and the Honour Award for Illustration from Childrens' Books Ireland, 2013.

An exquisite new book, featuring a boy and his moose, from internationally bestselling, multi-prize-winning picture book creator, Oliver Jeffers.

“Wilfred owned a moose. He hadn’t always owned a moose. The moose came to him a while ago and he knew, just KNEW, that it was meant to be his. He thought he would call him Marcel.”

Most of the time Marcel is very obedient, abiding by the many rules on How to Be a Good Pet. But one dark day, while deep in the woods, someone else claims the moose as their own…

Is Marcel really Wilfred’s pet after all?

An beautifully-illustrated, witty and thought-provoking story, exploring the concept of ownership.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures 19 Nov 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I love Oliver Jeffers's books - I have every single one of them as I love his beautiful drawings / artwork and the simple but powerful stories. This book is visually stunning with its pictures of the north american landscape but I felt that something was missing here. Can't put my finger on it (great pictures, nice story) - perhaps we have come to expect AMAZING things from OJ and therefore when a book (like this) is simply "very good" we are disappointed...? I bought both this and "The Hueys" (same author) at the same time and the Hueys is read out loud to my two year old son at least five times a week; this one far less so..

5.0 out of 5 stars The Moose is mine! 30 April 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Great and very sweet book about how mooses are free agents and won't really ever follow the rules. The drawings and collages are fabulous. I am not sure if my son really get the subtleties of the narrative but he loves Oliver Jeffers' books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Book By Oliver Jeffers 13 Dec 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Another great book. Though it has a very different feel to is compared to Lost & Found, How To Catch A Star and Up & Down. Jeffers has uses the book to illustrate using numerous different artistic techniques and styles which vary though the book (you get the feeling he had a lot of fun painting some big epic landscapes). I realise kids won't care about this but it does make it a fun book just to look at the pictures. As ever it has the typical quirky story that is bound to keep adults and kids amused. Maybe not his best work but then the bar is so high with Jeffers books that even this is excellent. Highly recommended.

I received this book from Harper Collins for an honest review.

Being a massive fan of Lost & Found by Oliver Jeffers, I requested this copy from Harper Collins and had very high expectations. Once again, Jeffers has managed to combine a thought-provoking story line with beautiful illustrations that capture children's attention and help to draw them into the plot.

This book explores the concept of ownership and teaches children that belongings should always be returned to their rightful owner. My Year 2 class grasped this concept quite quickly with one child saying that "Wilfred did the right thing. He gave the moose back in the end." Many of the children told me that they enjoyed the story as both Wilfred and the moose made good choices - Wilfred returned Marcel and Marcel became a good pet. In addition to this, my class were highly amused when Wilfred ended up in a 'perilous situation' tangled in a ball of string and hanging from Marcel's antlers.

Whilst discussing our likes and dislikes, one child told me that they didn't like the book as Wilfred's mum would be worried because he didn't come home. This book has many underlying themes that teaches children rights and wrongs in a fun and humorous way. There is some quite sophisticated language included such as 'enraged', 'perilous' and 'compromise' which allowed for some word level discussion and for children to add these to their vocabulary.

A beautifully-illustrated, thought-provoking story!
