Amazon.co.uk Review

By the time of its broadcast in the spring of 1997, the second series of the BBC's drama This Life was a major event, albeit on it's own, cultish terms. The years have not diminished the show's impact, as box set videos such as this one demonstrate. It could have been awful--a British attempt to mirror the various American thirtysomething shows that proliferated during the decade. The programme's many detractors had a point, in that This Life was both self-consciously hip (through its use of music and film techniques) and shocking (plot lines dealing with gay and straight sex, drugs and violence) but what saved it--as was the case with the similarly derided Queer As Folk--was the sheer quality of the script and cast. Series Two opens the morning after one of the pivotal points of the story, the long awaited coupling of Anna (Daniela Nardini, who dominates proceedings whenever on screen) and Miles (Jack Davenport) and the effect its fall-out has on them and the rest of their housemates Milly, Egg and Warren (Amita Dhiri, Jason Hughes and Andrew Lincoln). It's the relationship between these five main characters (four lawyers and one deeply confused ex-lawyer) that forms the crux of the programme, although there are some wonderful sub-plots and secondary characters. This Life may have been oft-copied since and the cast have oddly pretty much disappeared from view, but it remains eminently watchable and one of the BBC's finest dramas in recent years. --Phil Udell

DVD Description

SERIES 1

This multi-award-winning cult series eavesdrops on the lives of a group of young lawyers sharing a London house. Wild child Anna has trouble with men. Arrogant Miles is torn between two women. Control-freak Milly is torn between two men. Egg can't decide what to do with his life. Ferdy is bisexual and confused. And Warren is proud to be gay, as long as it doesn't mean telling his family.

I just got a hackable DVD player that will allow me to play any region's DVDs, and I've been dying to see THIS LIFE after several of my Brit friends recommended it. IT started off a little slow, but quickly became very addictive. "Just one more episode and then I'll go to bed..." It's amazingly well-written, the characters are realistic and human -- you alternate between loving and hating each one -- and it seems very much like a slice-of-life that you've been made privvy to. if you enjoy character-driven television, this one's for you.

The first series of This Life on DVD was something I knew I just had to buy. With the first eleven episodes you follow the characters through thier lives as newly successful twenty somethings. The script is just fantastic, and the chemistry on screen means that, like me, you probably won't be able to watch 'just the one'. If you loved it the first time round then by all means, relive those fab moments (Jo and Anna, Miles and Anna, and Anna and a bottle). Never seen it before? Shame on you! Find out what good television is all about...
