By Jervis VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Rumoured to be the most expensively produced variety series of its time, 'This Is Tom Jones' simply sizzles with warmth and vitality in a way that modern music series' rarely seem to do - this fourth volume 'What's New Pussycat' testifies to this fact once again, although i think it's maybe fair to say despite the greatness of many of the performances here, there exists some very apparent shortcomings which aren't connected to the show itself in its original form, but in the way it has been edited for this DVD release.

Once again many of the performances are split between the concert spot - 'What'd I Say', 'All Right Now' and 'Money', and the more elaborate production numbers with fancy set designs '(Sitting On The) Dock Of The Bay' and occasional dancers - 'What's New Pussycat', 'Mas Que Nada', all of which are highly enjoyable, as is the 'quiet' spot with Tom's rendition of 'Gentle On My Mind'. I especially love Tom's duet with the great Mama Cass Elliot - the medley 'One Night/Do Right Woman/I Guess I'll Always Love You' which really does sparkle with warmth and vitality. However, arguably the Bee Gees may just steal the show this time round with their marvellous rendition of their own songs 'I Started A Joke' and 'First Of May'. I think it's especially true watching all these performances to note the very high production values that were evident of the tv shows at this time - the orchestral backing really does create a richness of sound which is pretty much unheard of these days.

However, there is a significant shortcoming and that is the editing, or butchering (which seems probably more apt) of many of the scenes. A whole chunk appears to be taken from the middle of the Tom/Mama Cass duet, and Tom's first song of the first episode's concert spot seems to have been edited out, and not too subtely either. The introduction to one of the episodes refers to special guest Shirley Bassey and a solo spot by John Denver, but we get to see neither - only a duet between John and Tom - 'Carolina On My Mind'. This maybe isn't exclusive to this DVD alone but has been indicative of the series as a whole - but with this release the way in which these scenes have been deleted seems rather more blatant and heavy handed, especially considering the frankly inordinant length of the comedy scenes - especially the Ace Trucking Company, which can prove truly nausiating at times.

What is in evidence, however, musically of what has been retained is plenty of wonderfully engrossing performances, of the like we rarely hear today. Tom was at his peak vocally, and also as far as being a perfect charming host, especially in the way he had to adapt his voice to the various different musical genres of his guests. However, one can only gasp at the flagrant audacity TimeLife have in their brutal treatment of some of those fine performances. I was tempted to give this volume a very low rating because of this, but you can't keep great music down however badly it may be packaged (well, certainly not on this occasion!).

Time Life fails again 14 Nov 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Firstly the positives, the archival footage is great, and it is better than expected. This DVD is still a must for Tom Jones fans.

Now the negative..why do Time Life allow DVD"S like this, (and they have done the same in the past) to be released without checking the content? An example is where there is a segment right at the start of a show featuring Tom Jones "singing" who the guests are going to be on a particular show, including Shirley Bassey. So any normally intelligent person would expect that in that chapter of the DVD you would see Shirley Bassey. Not so, she is nowhere to be seen at all on the entire DVD. This type of editing by Time Life, or whoever does their editing for them, is not good, and it is obvious that continuity has not been followed. Viewers are not fools.
But that said, the actual content of the DVD is very good. Segments from both England with the late Jack Parnell, (a musical genius in his own right), and his Orchestra, and from America with the late Johnnie Spence conducting are first rate. Students of music today should have a look at DVD's like this and see how real orchestras used to do it live. The late great Ronnie Verrell on drums and "Big Jim" Sullivan on guitar on both British and American shows are an added "bonus" to watch in the live "concert" segments of the various programs.
I would have given this DVD 5 stars, except for the poor editing by Time Life or whoever checks this type of thing for them.

Unmercifully Edited 3 Episodes 11 April 2009
By gassy goon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
This Volume 3 of THIS IS TOM JONES is only 1 DVD, containing 3 episodes of the show, but all are severely edited. MARCH 21, 1969 is a great show, particularly because TOM and MAMA CASS ELLIOT do a stupendous medley of soul songs: ONE NIGHT WITH YOU, DO RIGHT WOMAN and I GUESS I'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU. But , shockingly, they even cut at least one song from their performance together out of the medley! Not only that, but Cass' solo song is not included either. What a shame, a legendary performer such as her, & they left out her complete performances on this episode. Instead you get a clean shaven GEORGE CARLIN in a suit doing an unfunny 5 minute dud of a monolouge. THE DAVE CLARK FIVE are listed as guests on this episode, but not surprisingly, they are nowhere to be seen. What's left are 3 songs by Tom: WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT, GENTLE ON MY MIND, and WHAT'D I SAY , but even the star of the show has songs cut out of his concert that ends each episode. JANUARY 1, 1971 is even more severely edited. It has Tom doing a very short AIN'T THAT GOOD NEWS, and Free's ALL RIGHT NOW at the end of the show, leaving out other songs as well. Guest JOHN DENVER is seen in a duet with Tom on CAROLINA IN MY MIND, and then a short instrumental guitar piece with an uncredited guitarist , probably as a segueway to a commercial break. The original episode has SHIRLEY BASSEY, Tom's compatriot from Wales, but she is totally left out. Instead we get the complete skits by comedy troup THE ACE TRUCKING COMPANY, which go on for 10 minutes. What a shame. It must be easy to clear comedy performances, but not song copyrights. The 3rd episode from FEBRUARY 1969 is the least edited, but it excludes the performance by LULU. She's seen introducing THE BEE GEES with Tom. Mercifully, their 2 songs aren't edited . ROBIN GIBB has really long hair singing I STARTED A JOKE, and then BARRY GIBB sings FIRST OF MAY. It's a great vintage performance of a 4 member BEE GEES. Another groovy guest pairing is Tom singing with SERGIO MENDES AND BRASIL '66 on a song caled MAS QUE NADA. It's a groovy feeling seeing Tom & the 2 female singers of the group sing and move to the samba grooves. TIM CONWAY occupys space with 2 comedy spots, and they also chose to include actress LYNN REDGRAVE singing a complete song ! Tom's songs are DOCK OF THE BAY and MONEY, again cutting out songs from the concert portion.

The strength's of THIS IS TOM JONES are the musical performances. They are vintage , live performances that recorded the moment. The combination of Tom with different artists brought out all sorts of things in each singer's performances that are unique. To see CASS ELLIOT singing a soul medley with Tom is a rare and great performance. Whatever the reasons are that they cut out her solo, and also SHIRLEY BASSEY, LULU and the rest of the guest stars who are missing performances really cheats the buyer. The music is what's important, not the comedy skits, which they should have edited out. Probably clearance and copyright problems, certainly with the DC5. The episodes look and sound great, are in color, but butchered as could be. As vintage and rare as this show is, they should not have sacrified the legendary performers out of the episodes. It's great to see most of what's here, but what they excluded is inexcusable.

Just A Tease 11 April 2009
By Tskogg - Published on Amazon.com

I don't get it. What's the point of putting out snippets when you can produce the whole series? This volume clocks in at less than 77 minutes. Can you do us a favor and just put out a collection of TJ's performances from the series???? Chronologically if possible??? The random dribs and drabs are infuriating. Love the man. Love the performances. Hate the compilation choices.

Not Enough of Tom 16 May 2009
By mmd4tj - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
In my excitement to order the newest DVD on Sir Tom Jones, I was yet again disappointed that so much space was given to the comedy routines and not enough on the star, Sir Tom Jones. I enjoyed the segments where he duetted with his guest stars. There were some great singers during that early era of Tom's career. The producers of these releases obviously have not taken consumer complaints seriously about the content of Tom's TV career. It would be more to his fans' liking to feature Tom Jones for a full DVD release. If I wanted a comedy revue of those years, I would have purchased a comedy DVD.
