It didn't have a name, this new sound that Mike Scott was hearing in his head, so he called it The Big Music. This, it turns out, was something of an understatement. If Icarus had access to a recording studio, the ensuing result may have sounded like This Is The Sea--nine songs almost entirely unified by one man's desire to transcend his mortality. As you can imagine, it's an intense affair. Anthony Thistlethwaite's celestial sax playing seems to duel constantly with Scott's impassioned exhortations--to stunning effect on "Medicine Bow" and "Don't Bang The Drum". In the hands of most artists, such ambition would only result in grand folly. As "The Whole Of The Moon"--the most famous track on this album--emphasises though, there was something truly visionary about Scott at this time. To spend any time with This Is The Sea is to feel an entire Glastonbury of goose pimples take place on your spine. --Peter Paphides

The Waterboys were formed as a band by Mike Scott in the early eighties and immediately started forging a sound that would develop through two albums to become the leading edge of mid-eighties Celtic rock. "This is the Sea" is the culmination of this period of the band's development, a period that was cut short by Scott's move to Ireland and the subsequent change in direction.
"The Whole of the Moon" is probably the most successful song that the band has had to date, but on this album it is simply one of many dark forays into myths and legends. The powerful simplicity of "Spirit", the damning indictment of Thatcher's Britain in "Old England", the summing up of the Cold War in "Be my enemy" - it's all there. Coupled with love songs like "Trumpets" this is a powerful album and an album which makes you wonder where the band would have gone had fate had different things in store for them.
Thoroughly recommended! Buy it.

This album in 1985 was the follow up to the successful album 'A pagans place' . This album showcased there early more rock sound with a Gaelic influence before they went down the more folk sound in the subsequent albums after. Along with the main man Mike Scott the album also featured Steve Wickham and Karl Wallinger (Who then departed to form World Party).

The album includes the classic 'the whole of the moon' which was a top 30 hit and the album contains the usual mix of love, religion and politics. Medicine Bow, Be my enemy and old England are great tunes to get the old soul pumping.

All in a all a very good album.

I'm not great fan of the Waterboys, don't get me wrong the music is fantastic and this album is as good if not better than the last one. What I do know for sure is that my Mrs absolutely loves them and in-fact, it was one of her most favourite prezzies I got her recently. So, in summary, if you like them buy it, if you know someone that likes them buy it and give it to them and if you have never heard them before buy it because you will like it once you have got it.

Ah, moody, moody, rock. The Waterboys are just pure passionate moody lyricism and this is the classiest of their passionate works to me. 'The Whole of The Moon' and 'Trumpets' are my favorites on this one. If you like Jeff Buckley, then this is a similar brew with an Irish Pogues-like kick up the bejoonies. Haunting vocals just make this shiver-up-the-back luvly. Well worth anyone's dosh & cheap at the price here!
