Book Description

May 1960
Like the other Sasek classics, this is a facsimile edition of the original book. The brilliant, vibrant illustrations have been meticulously preserved, remaining true to his vision more than 40 years later. Facts have been updated for the 21st-century, appearing on a "This is . . . Today" page at the back of the book. These charming illustrations, coupled with Sasek's witty, playful narrative, make for a perfect souvenir that will delight both children and their parents, many of whom will remember the series from their own childhoods. This is Rome, first published in 1960, traces the history of Roman civilization to bring to life the Rome of the 60's. Sasek navigates Rome's busy, winding streets to visit such glorious historical landmarks as the statues of Michelangelo, Vatican City, the Pantheon, and the Fontana di Trevi-and to show us the eccentricities of modern Roman life, from its colorful trains, trams, and taxis to its chic espresso bars and pasta houses.

5.0 out of 5 stars It made my daughter's vacation! 9 April 2008
I purchased this book on a whim. In fact, I purchased it even before we had the trip planned. I almost forgot to bring it along when we did go. But my 4 year old daughter didn't. She seemed to like the illustrations. So when we did come upon the first sight that she recognized from her book (the coloseum) she became very animated. It made a huge impact on my daughters involvement in our family travel. She was no longer just a passenger along for the ride...she was involved in the trip and anticipated seeing things that she recognized from HER book.

The book also had an intriguing description of a key hole on top of the Aventine hill with a great view. We decided to hunt it down and were pleasantly surprised. It was a secret gem that wasn't mentioned in any of the guidebooks that we read.

I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone with a child 2-7 who is planning a trip to Rome. I am only sorry that I didn't buy the matching book for Venice as we went there after Rome. I searched in vain in the bookshops there but couldn't find it in English.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is Rome 30 Jan 2012
By Alp
This book is vey detailed with lots if drawings. Having also this is Paris and this is Venice though I was disappointed. This is Paris is a fantastic book but we have found the Rome book less interesting and too detailed. My son reads the Paris book everyday but doesn't like the Rome book at all. Nothing wrong with the book but like all books depends what the child reader finds interesting

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Purchase! 23 July 2008
By Sandra N. Planck - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this book for my son before our trip to Italy, in which we spent a week in Rome. My son just turned 5 before our trip and I homeschool. We read this book and looked at the beautiful pictures before going. It was a wonderful book! After reading the book together, he looked forward to seeing the Coleseum and throwing the coin in the Trevi Fountain and eating some gelato. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning on visiting Rome with children between the ages of 4-8. Prepares and excites child for what they will see. Then afterward is a good reminder of their vacation. My son will still pull out his 'This is Rome' book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Kids 12 Jun 2007
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
What a lovely book! How have I missed it all these years? I gave it to my daughter, 20, as a memento of our trip to Rome. It captures the spirit and sights of Rome better than anything else I've seen. It might work as a runup to a trip also, or just a wonderful book to dream on for kids and adults. The illustrations are sixties sublime!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the more elegant entries in the sasek series 23 May 2011

sasek's books are all visually lovely, no doubt about it, however they are also incredibly informative, which i quite appreciate. this book is littered with amazing images and interesting facts. i would definitely say this entry has some of the more elegant images present in sasek's books.

and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the city...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the city WAS as well as the present day differences.

i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either rome, or simply in wonderful illustration.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Picture Book of Rome 27 Feb 2012
By Jason Golomb - Published on Amazon.com
"Once the capital of the Roman Empire, now the capital of Italy and the center of Catholic Christendom, Rome is the "eternal city" - where the old world and the new stand side by side."

Miroslav Sasek's "This is Rome" is a beautiful picture book that will give readers of all ages a look at the wonders of this amazing city. Starting right from the beginning with the two baby brothers, Romulus and Remus, brought up by a motherly she-wolf on the Palantine Hill, Sasek's crisp descriptions blend seemlessly with his subdued watercolors to bring Rome, with it's ancient wonders, to life.

The watercolor style and some of the depictions of the "modern" Rome will appear dated to an adult eye, but the images of the city's landmarks remain true.

Sasek's tour ranges from the Forum, to the Pantheon, to the Vatican and everything in between.

If you're planning a trip to Italy, this is a perfect introduction for any pre-schooler. The drawings will help connect young children to the sites they may see.

This book is just beautiful, both the pictures and the writing. I love how old-fashioned it is. It reminds me so much of my time in Rome! I would recommend it to anyone who loves Italy.
