David Richards directs this fact-based drama exploring the case of 'The Yorkshire Ripper'. Throughout the 1970s and early '80s, the serial killer preyed on young women and committed a total of 13 murders in the West Yorkshire area. This film shows a dramatisation of the investigation led by Detective George Oldfield (Alun Armstrong) which took its toll on both his career and personal life but which also led to the conviction of Peter Sutcliffe (Craig Cheetham) in 1981.

I remember very well the Yorkshire Ripper's reign of terror through Leeds, Bradford and other cities in west Yorkshire between 1975 and 1980 and this superb reconstruction of his crimes and the long agonising police investigation produced a powerful performance from Alun Armstrong who playes George Oldfield, the leader of the hunt for the elusive serial killer for many years until his retirement in 1983 with the killer still at large. It shows the frustration of the police as the killings continue without them being able to catch the perpetrator, the increasing physical and psychological strain on Oldfield as his health starts to fail and he has to continually face the grieving families of the murdered women and cope with an increasingly critical press and public. He also has to deal with the friction between himself and some of his colleagues who he is convinced are trying to undermine him because he had earlier investigated police corruption. The police were deceived for many years by a hoax tape recording sent by a man with a Geordie accent in June 1979 who claimed to be the Yorkshire Ripper but the real killer turned out to be a lorry driver from Bradford called Peter Sutcliffe who the police had interviewed nine times.

The perpetrator of this cruel hoax known as "Wearside Jack" which had such disasterous consequences for the police and the people of west Yorkshire was identified in 2006 as John Humble by matching DNA found in his saliva on an envelope he had sent to the police. He was subsequently imprisoned for eight years.

The story of Peter Sutcliffe/Yorkshire Ripper really intrigues me. I've seen reviews complaining about the length and lack of pace - what can you expect from a film about a long drawn out murder investigation? The length is absolutely vital, baring in mind it took 12 years for them to catch him. I thought this was very well acted and something I will watch a number of times.

Cool to finally see this Granada production released on DVD, but sadly the picture has been cropped from it's original 1.78 Aspect ratio to 4:3!
I really thought DVD companies (in this instance Strawberry Media) were past all this pointless reformatting.
If however this doesn't concern you too much, this is a well produced drama covering the reign of the Yorkshire Ripper and the building pressure on George Oldfield and his team to catch the notorious killer. THIS IS PERSONAL is a long but nicely paced drama and features some fine performances, in particular from Alun Armstrong (as Oldfield), James Laurenson (Chief Constable Gregory) and John Duttine (Jim Hobson), Highly Recommended.

This is the absolute best portrayal of the hunt for the Yorkshhire Ripper. The acting and the characterisations are excellent and the programme captures exactly what it felt like at the time.

This reconstruction, generally faithful to the actual hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper, is well-conceived and constructed, and Alun Armstrong carries off the character of the lead detective, warts and all.

This isn't just a detective story - there are intersting insights into the impacts on lives of victims and their families, the frustrations and pains they go through, the impatience with lack of evident progress at many turns.

Not light entertainment, but well worth the time to view at least once, and good value for money.

This is a thoroughly absorbing and brilliant dramatisation of the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper. It not only captures the frustration of the West Yorkshire police at their failure to find the evil Sutcliffe, but also their staggering incompetence. The 'going-through-the-motions' of some of the Ripper detectives is also captured as is some of the the misogynistic attitude of some of the squad as well. The most tragic aspect of the film is way the hoaxer diverted the attention of a failing police enquiry allowing Sutcliffe to continue his reign of terror. As someone who remembers the events very clearly, the way Sutcliffe was eventually caught - does lead to speculation that he might never have been apprehended. The film is long, but then so was the inquiry. Alun Armstrong is outstanding as Oldfield, matched in his performance by Richard Ridings as Dick Holland. Thankfully the lessons learned from the failure of the Ripper enquiry is that with the modern police procedural methods, DNA and most importantly the HOLMES criminal database linking all the forces - this type of enquiry and its incompetence can never be repeated.
