Director Judd Apatow gets the Zeitgeist just right in the low-key but truly funny comedy This Is 40. This Is 40 is billed as a "sort-of sequel" to Knocked Up and Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann star in both as a happily married couple. In This Is 40, both Pete (Rudd) and Debbie (Mann) turn 40, which sets off a small but irreversible midlife crisis for both. Luckily, the two have a pretty privileged and happy life. It's as though they don't even truly know how to have a midlife crisis, yet it's somehow expected. There are a lot of genuine laughs in This Is 40, many bordering on bad taste--but still hilarious. Pete's struggle with hemorrhoids is one of those movie jokes you know you shouldn't laugh at, but you do. The answer to the question "Will Pete and Debbie and their family still be cool as they get older?" is probably never at issue, but watching the two actors, who have tremendous chemistry, bounce off each other during their birthday week really is funny. Adding to the merriment is the stellar supporting cast, including Megan Fox, Graham Parker (yes, the rocker), Lena Dunham (Girls), Melissa McCarthy, Chris O'Dowd, and Albert Brooks, who truly elevate This Is 40 to a genius ensemble experience. 3.0 out of 5 stars IT IMPROVES WITH AGE 11 May 2013
By The Movie Guy TOP 500 REVIEWER
In this film Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann)turn 40 and re-examine their lives. Debbie decides everyone must make changes while Pete hides the fact they are broke. It seems Pete invested his future in the resurgence of Graham Parker.

They are clearly a mixed couple as Pete likes classic rock while Debbie prefers Lady Gaga. They also have father issues, one is a stranger (John Lithgow) while the other needs a handout (Albert Brooks). Apatow also brings back his daughters Maude and Iris from "Knocked Up" to be Sadie and Charlotte again. I must say his daughters did a great job as a moody foul mouthed 11 year old and an 8 year old wise beyond her years who says to her sister, "You're no fun since your body got weird."

The humor is never really a side splitter such as when they are talking to each other as their counselor says they should talk to each other:

Paul: "When I apologize, that means you'll let it go and won't throw it back at me in the future?"
Debbie: "I don't do that and I will continue not to do that."

If you loved Apatow's other work, this one is in line with them: crudely humorous and pretentious masquerading as a meaningful statement on modern relationships.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, nudity (Leslie Mann). Megan Fox bra/panties and bikini. Maybe as a rental.

In case you are watching "Lost" for the first time, this film includes the spoiler ending.

A comedic tale of family life as husband and wife both turn 40 in the same week, dealing with the pressures of children, work and extended family. If you are around that age range then there is much to be recognised here!

This is 40 features a strong (if not a little incestous) cast and some very funny set-pieces.

The film would benefit from being 20-30 minutes shorter and, frustratingly, there are a lot of lose ends left dangling.

Whatever you do, don 't miss the hilarious mid-credits out-take.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious 25 May 2014
By David H J Ashdown TOP 500 REVIEWER
Very funny politically incorrect film about a bunch of friends who're approaching the scary milestone fortieth birthday. As they try to take stock of where they are and what they want out of life a lot of home truths surface in the melee. Laugh out loud at times and funny throughout. Watch out for the classic rant in the head teacher's office and wait for the same but funnier outtake as the credits roll.

3.0 out of 5 stars Family With Issues 6 Oct 2013
'This Is 40 ' is a frank film about married life, bringing up children, dealing with difficult parents, and just plain getting older. Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann play a married couple, both with fathers who are more than troublesome. It is a film with humor, but often the humor is really forced. I saw the film on HBO, so didn't spend the fortune it takes nowadays to take the family to the movies.

The film takes us several places, downsizing and the economic crisis. Something, however, was missing. The storyline never reached out and took a hold of me. The couple's children are their own children, and the family had real chemistry, which is a very good thing!

3.0 out of 5 stars Strange. 20 Aug 2014
Stories normally start with a trigger event, followed by some kind of journey, ending with a conclusion to wrap things up. This film was over two hours of watching a family live their lives. It's well put together and frequently very funny, but it felt weird that there wasn't even an attempt at a plot of any kind. I wouldn't watch the film again.
