Director Judd Apatow gets the Zeitgeist just right in the low-key but truly funny comedy This Is 40. This Is 40 is billed as a "sort-of sequel" to Knocked Up and Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann star in both as a happily married couple. In This Is 40, both Pete (Rudd) and Debbie (Mann) turn 40, which sets off a small but irreversible midlife crisis for both. Luckily, the two have a pretty privileged and happy life. It's as though they don't even truly know how to have a midlife crisis, yet it's somehow expected. There are a lot of genuine laughs in This Is 40, many bordering on bad taste--but still hilarious. Pete's struggle with hemorrhoids is one of those movie jokes you know you shouldn't laugh at, but you do. The answer to the question "Will Pete and Debbie and their family still be cool as they get older?" is probably never at issue, but watching the two actors, who have tremendous chemistry, bounce off each other during their birthday week really is funny. Adding to the merriment is the stellar supporting cast, including Megan Fox, Graham Parker (yes, the rocker), Lena Dunham (Girls), Melissa McCarthy, Chris O'Dowd, and Albert Brooks, who truly elevate This Is 40 to a genius ensemble experience. 4.0 out of 5 stars This is ....... Very funny! 12 May 2013
This film is very funny, certainly if your 40 ish. Great comedy writing, Rudd and Mann are perfectly cast.

Don't stop the film when the credits roll, if you do you will miss one of the best rants ever!

A comedic tale of family life as husband and wife both turn 40 in the same week, dealing with the pressures of children, work and extended family. If you are around that age range then there is much to be recognised here!

This is 40 features a strong (if not a little incestous) cast and some very funny set-pieces.

The film would benefit from being 20-30 minutes shorter and, frustratingly, there are a lot of lose ends left dangling.

Whatever you do, don 't miss the hilarious mid-credits out-take.

3.0 out of 5 stars Family With Issues 6 Oct 2013
'This Is 40 ' is a frank film about married life, bringing up children, dealing with difficult parents, and just plain getting older. Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann play a married couple, both with fathers who are more than troublesome. It is a film with humor, but often the humor is really forced. I saw the film on HBO, so didn't spend the fortune it takes nowadays to take the family to the movies.

The film takes us several places, downsizing and the economic crisis. Something, however, was missing. The storyline never reached out and took a hold of me. The couple's children are their own children, and the family had real chemistry, which is a very good thing!

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 18 Aug 2013
Very disappointed in this - it held so much promise. But it dragged on and wasn't very funny. I'll never get those hours of my life back...

3.0 out of 5 stars really ? 15 April 2014

This is 40 - well, I enjoyed it but did find it hard to sympathise with the main characters ( massive house, nice cars and their own businesses ). They have money and relationship troubles but it seemed to be that they were victims of their own complacency and just hadn't grown up enough to look after themselves and say 'no' to family.
It is a funny film but could have been better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a Film, More A Generous Slice of Life 30 Mar 2014
By Filthy Raider TOP 1000 REVIEWER
I'd always felt that the best two characters in Knocked Up were Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, and this is a great follow up to see what that family are getting up to. Keeping it in the family are the Director's and Mann's two girls who play the two daughters in this.

You probably have to be a certain age and have kids to get it all, but it is a genuinely funny dip into a time in the life of the family. Where it may fail to some people is it has no real 'narrative', no cut and dried story you might say.

Where it wins are the performances, the script and the overall general situation. Like I said, you might need to be a certain age and situation to get it, so I can understand anyone who feels it misses the mark.

Some recognisable faces turn up like Albert Brookes as Judd's dad (although you will just hear the father's voice from Finding Nemo) and John Lithgow as the other 'grandpa' amongst several.

As I say, it will miss the mark for some, but it pushed all the buttons for good evening's watch here.

This was such a funny movie. It is exactly how life really can go :)
There are also a lot of serious issues that it deals with but is a great film to watch as a couple.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not much happens!
I have not seen the end as it did not have much going on in the film. It was going to last 2 hours!! I was skipping every 10 minutes & I didn't feel like I missed anything! Shame!
