"This Here", "Dat Dere" and "Moanin" (the last famously recorded by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) were tunes so catchy Timmon's named them "the three elements of the plague" because audiences never tired of requesting them! They are all footstompingly good tunes, with a raw power and passion that sound as fresh and uncompromising today as they did 40 years ago. There is a selection of equally strong standards, "My Funny Valentine", "Come Rain or Come Shine", and "Lush Life" are all given Timmon's unique treatment. "Lush Life" in particular is an interpretation rich with instinctive melody, and while many Jazz soloists seem anxious to play the maximum number of notes, even if looses the listener, Timmons never plays an extraneous note. But it's not all sweat, on "Prelude to a kiss", and "My Funny Valentine" the melodies get all the space they deserve.
In short this is hard bop piano at its finest!
