Biography

Scout Niblett is Nottingham, England's answer to all the brash, intelligent, and honest female songwriters that emerged from America during the early 21st century. Continually compared to Cat Power and fellow countrywoman PJ Harvey, Niblett proved her own merit with a strong, stark voice and a penchant for spartan songs containing only drums and vocals. She also became known for her ... Read more in Amazon's Scout Niblett Store

Product Description

BBC Review

Make what you will of Scout Niblett's voice, but you can't help but admire her confidence in it. Sure that she can survive the harshest of aural terrains, the Brighton-born songstress is quite happy to pit her vocals against jutting, angry drums and bursts of obtrusive guitar. Unlike other female singers who turn to computer production programs to sweeten their harmonies, Scout uses them to make her music coarser.

It's an effect which takes some getting used to, but it certainly gives Scout's music a raw, spontaneous feel. And few could deny there's character in the way the thick, sludgy power-chords strike without warning, rousing any headphone-listeners lulled by Scout's murmur, or the way the naked drum-rhythms potter nervously, as if they share our uncertainty at what might be coming next.

This Fool Can Die Now is Niblett's fourth album, bolder and broader than her previous releases. While the cyclonic buzz of 'Hide and Seek' or the crowded din of 'Let Thine Heart Be Warmed' might sound like another tribute to Niblett's hero Kurt Cobain, tracks like 'Baby Emma' see Scout let loose with uninhibited wail, showing a childlike aversion to grungy angst.

What holds this album together is a sense that Scout is finally establishing her own musical identity. As for those irritating transatlantic comparisons to Cat Power, This Fool Can Die Now won't kill them off overnight, but at least it'll give people a bit more to talk about. --Robert Jackman

Scout Niblett is not the English Cat Power. Comparisons like that tend to be based mostly on her voice and are a result of laziness, why not compare her to Nina Nastasia as well, and Shannon Wright. I agree the 2003 album, Sweet Heart Fever, the most obviously influenced by Cat Power warrants such a comparison, but c'mon we've moved on through four more albums now and isn't it about time that people found something else to say. On her latest offering, Scout does four duets with Will Oldham, the best two making up the first couple of the albums tracks. `Kiss' probably the most romantic duet of the year and one to rival last year's Bill Callahan / Joanna Newsom duet on Ys's `Only Skin'. The rest of the tracks on the album are more diverse than previous efforts - some use aspects of Scout's minimally obsessed rhythms and repetitive drum beats (`Moon Lake'), but others have a slow, calm ballad-esque melody (`Elizabeth (Black Hearted Queen)'). Yet, overall it is Scout's voice, grown more confident with age, that really makes this such a great album. She is comfortable singing sexy, bluesy vocals on `Your Last Chariot' in a storm of screeching guitars, but equally she plays the part of the fragile little girl on the heart-breaking `Baby Emma'.

Highlights: Kiss, Do You Wanna Be Buried With My People, Elizabeth (Black Hearted Queen), Nevada

I took a punt and went to see Scout at the thekla in Bristol. I'd never heard anything from her apart from one tune on utube.

Fantastic gig and what a great album. As many people have said she's odd, kooky etc. but that ignores the sheer beauty and power of her songwriting and performance. Just listen to Kiss, it's become one of those songs that will always stay with me. And the sound that she gets out of that Fender Twin (?) is fantastic. I wish more people knew about her. This is the only album I have so far but will be getting more.

Best Music of the Year 15 Oct 2007

Wow! What a record, I'm a huge fan of her work, and really loved Kidnapped, but I was really stunned by this record, I guess I always knew she could come up with such an awesome collection of songs, and here it is. It's the record Cat Power and PJ Harvey should be making.

Kiss with Will Oldham is transcendent, and the video for Kiss is one of the best music videos I've seen in years, It's practically high art. Nevada, Dinosaur Egg, Yummy, and Fishes And Honey are just a few of the many highlights. It such a beautiful, bleak and quirky album. The 2007 musically highpoint.

dark, cathartic, and artistic 15 Dec 2008

Scout Niblett's "This Fool..." is minimalist, forceful and contains dark songs punctuated by cathartic eruptions. (Steve Albini is the producer.) The arrangements and melodies are spare and odd, but everything hangs together well. It's not party music, but it's worth listening to with the lights off. "Dinosaur Egg" is the sole glimpse of whimsy, and despite the heavy treatment, it is hilarious.

Scout delivers again. The songs are well crafted and are really beautiful with the rhythm section backing of Kristian Goddard and Chris Saligoe. The killer tracks though are the duets with Will Oldham. Listen to "kiss" and forgive the falsetto, This Fool Can Die now is a sweet work of passion.
