The list of authors reads like 'who is who' in science. Each describes in informal contemplative way some fundamental concepts in his/her field and them problems they pose. It is not a textbook, but the reader gets a superb outline of the challenges facing science and philosophy. Some basic familiarity with science would be useful. A truly thought provoking book.

Many of those who purchase and then begin to read this book will learn, for the first time, about Edge.org, a website offering an abundance of resources. John Brockman is the Editor of This Will Make You Smarter (2012) and This Explains Everything (2013). He is also the Editor and Publisher of Edge. As he explains, its purpose is to "arrive at the edge of the world's knowledge, seek out the most complex and sophisticated minds, put them in a room together, and have them ask each other the questions they are asking themselves."

He goes on to suggest, "Edge is a Conversation: Edge is different from the Algonquin Roundtable or Bloomsbury Group, but it offers the same quality of intellectual adventure. Closer resemblances are the early seventeenth-century Invisible College, a precursor to the Royal Society. Its members consisted of scientists such as Robert Boyle, John Wallis, and Robert Hooke. The Society's common theme was to acquire knowledge through experimental investigation. Another inspiration is The Lunar Society of Birmingham, an informal club of the leading cultural figures of the new industrial age -- James Watt, Erasmus Darwin, Josiah Wedgewood, Joseph Priestly, and Benjamin Franklin."

Last year, those involved with Edge were asked to respond to a question also proposed by Steven Pinker: 'What scientific concept would improve everyone's cognitive toolkit?" Here's The Edge Question 2012: "WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DEEP, ELEGANT, OR BEAUTIFUL EXPLANATION?"

There were more than 200 online responses that were then reviewed before Brockman produced an edited selection.

Reading the thoughts of some of the best minds on the planet is an education and a pleasure. The essays are short so you can dip in and out when an author or subject takes your fancy. As I didn't read mine in any particular order I kept a pencil with it to tick off the essays as I read them.

You can just dip in any time for another 2/3-page item on some remarkable insight into how the world works.

Just finished it, feel smarter already, and am now going to read it again.

It explains hardly anything, just a bunch of academic giving us their own rather biased opinions on different subjects and flaunting their scholarly prowess while they're at it.

This is a book about the state of science today. As is the nature of these things, some of the theories are more deep, more elegant and more beautiful than others. The stand out entries, however, really do jolt the system with wonder and the book as a whole is like a shot in the arm of reason and objectivity. It is a workout for the intelligence and a primer for current thinking. It's also fun showing people the cover.

This is a series of very short (mostly two pages or less) essays, by famous people, mostly scientists. It's the fifth one of Brockman's ("Edge") collections I've read, and it's as impressive as the previous ones. Too many of the essays took Natural Selection as the best, most elegant theory, but from many different directions. Go on. you'll enjoy it!!
