Reviews

The first two series of the Channel 4 drama written and directed by Shane Meadows revisiting the characters from his 2007 film 'This Is England'. In 'This Is England '86' Thomas Turgoose reprises his role as Shaun, a school-leaver with few prospects in mid-1980s England. Shaun and his friends must attempt to deal with the issues posed by the transition to adulthood in an unstable social climate where 3.4 million people are unemployed and there are strikes, race riots and anti-nuclear protests. The events of 'This Is England '88' take place two years on from the initial spin-off series. Set in and around Christmas, there is a distinct absence of festive spirit as Lol (Vicky McClure) and Woody (Joe Gilgun) struggle to come to terms with events from the past. Shaun, meanwhile, learns first-hand the pain that love can bring.

After watching these on TV i found them quite entertaining there was some comic moments with Gadget but these two series were darker more character driven then This is England i would like to thank Shane Meadows for writing this and creating a future classic.

To the other reviews about regions i found it unfair your meant to comment on the programme not if the discs worked take it up with amazon

I Thought it was excellent, Vicky McClure's portrayal of Lol was amazing, she really emersed herself in to the part and deservedly won the BAFTA . All the other characters play their part aswell guided by Shane Meadows gritty realistic style of direction. Original, quality drama with a great soundtrack.

British drama truly at its finest, the acting performances of Vicky McClure, Joe Gilgun and Stephen Graham were jaw droppingly good, which is a little of a dis-service to the other actors that were also deserving of a mention.

The stories in these series were definately darker than the film, but I must say I was completely immersed in the world created by Shane Meadows, who manages to mix darkness and light to stunning effect...if I`m being totaly honest, I will admit to watching certain scenes with tears in my eyes and then found myself laughing at the top of my voice, a definite break-neck journey of emotions....gutted when it ended, which is always a good sign.

Any chance of This Is England 90 Mr Meadows?

I loved these films. The acting is superb, at times really funny, at others shocking. The soundtrack is great. Vicky McClure and Thomas Turgoose especially are excellent. As a former skinhead it takes me back!

As someone who has watched all of the 'greatest tv shows' (The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Wire etc) this is one of the few british show that I think can sit comfortably among them.

'86 in particular is one of my favourite pieces of television - its both funny and heart-warming at one minute and then harrowing, disturbing and upsetting the next.

It's a masterfully told story and the writing, acting and directing are all superb. Highly recommended although perhaps not for the faint of heart - some scenes a very difficult to watch - scenes of sexual violence.

I've been an avid fan of Shane Meadows' This Is England since the first film came out, the TV shows adds something special to the mix and deals with hardhitting issues including mental illness, depression, friendship and infideloy. Meadows takes the characters on a journey through life for the ups and downs. The film also stays authentic to the time period it's based in and has the known humour and antics that it is known for. Overall if you are a fan of the movie this is a must watch. I am just so excited for the final installment to come. 4/5

We enjoyed these films when shown on TV. They are excellent although dealing with fairly hard issues, but there is love within the group of characters.

Loved the film when it came out; the soundtrack, the characters, the relationships and the fashion. I watched parts of the series when it was on TV but after finishing Breaking Bad, Prison Break and Vikings I wanted another series that I could binge-watch so bought this boxset. I would highly recommend this series for all the reasons I gave for the film, although there are some upsetting scenes and therefore I would recommend sticking to the 18 rated certificate.
