Biography

A rock provides a major clue to the heartbeat of Brad Paisley’s Wheelhouse.

The piece, a silhouette of Paisley’s homestate West Virginia, is embedded in one of two stone walls of the drum room in his converted home studio. The state represents the place where he first acquired the skills that coalesced into one of contemporary country’s most important careers. The ... Read more in Amazon's Brad Paisley Store

BBC Review

Bit presumptuous, that title; but if anyone can use it, the current Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year can. And there’s nothing on this album, Paisley’s ninth, that isn’t fully representative of today’s country music. As the opening title-track says, "You’re not supposed to sing about… cancer… Jesus… tractors… little towns… momma… But this is country music, and we do." And he does.

Any country fan will tell you that it works, that you can’t beat a few too many beers, and George Jones or Merle Haggard on the jukebox. The trouble with this is being told you’ve got to enjoy it. This is Country Music plays as if a jaded exec in the record company’s office, convinced a big idea was needed for Brad’s new one, suggested a tribute to, um, country music; and the rest around the table agreed just so they could get home. There are already too many ‘good old country music’ songs; we don’t need any more.

Set that gripe aside and this set is standard… no, above-standard Paisley fare. He’s co-written most of the songs. It might have been better if he hadn’t, as there are greater writers out there who need the work, but he’s infused his usual good humour into a few of these numbers. He mixes an appropriate amount of sentimentality with a few laughs and good southern blokeishness. He teams up with a couple of notable guests: Carrie Underwood, a bit squeaky on Remind Me, and Clint Eastwood, who appears playing a whistle on the curious instrumental Eastwood, sort of a Western movie soundtrack pastiche. The album culminates in a fine, if a tad over-worked, version of the traditional gospel song, Life’s Railway to Heaven, featuring vocals from Marty Stuart, Sheryl Crow and Carl Jackson.

But what sets this album so far out from the rest of the modern country pack is Paisley’s unbelievable guitar-playing. He writes okay, he sings really well, he has the music in his soul; but he plays the guitar like he’s from another world. Some may find that the exuberance of his technique occasionally overwhelms his songs, but it’s worth it for the sheer ingenuity he injects into it.

Brad Paisley’s at the top of the heap now. But to hear what he’d do if he wasn’t bound by the rules laid down on Music Row would be something special, as he’s got so much more to offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first Brad Paisley Album 14 Mar 2014
Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
Being from the UK, I haven't been exposed to a lot of Brad'd music, so it was with some treppidation that I downloaded this album. Listening to new music for the 1st time can be a hit-and-miss affair, it is easy to mistake a lack of familiarity for a dislike of the tune or album. I find I often need to listen to new albums several times before I come to like it.

Not so with album, right from the start the tunes have easy hooks, the sound warm and welcoming. Brad has a great country voice, maybe not as distinctive as some of his contempories, it is nonetheless close to the very definition of a male country voice.

Good sound, good tunes, quality production values. Good Stuff!!

5.0 out of 5 stars What's not to love? 22 April 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
One of his best I think. I know the critics dont care for the 'down home' songs, but I like them - it's partly what the genre is about. And great to sing to in the car....

5.0 out of 5 stars our fav artist since 2004 11 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD
over the last few years I've lost interest in most of the uk charts and turned to country music. In 2004 I was watching the country music awards on uk tv and saw Brad Paisley/ Alison Kraus singing whiskey lullaby, wow I thought, now this is what i'd like to listen too and have been buying his cd's ever since, Brad has a great way with lyrics and tunes and he's a great guitar player, my fav's on this cd are working on a tan and one of those lives, yes you do feel as if he's recorded songs like these on other albums , but that's been his style, he has his own sound, looking forward to his next one in April. My wife is now also a big fan and we've seen him in concert 3 times in the uk, the first 2 times in a small venue and met him twice also, what a nice person he is too, very approachable, it's been great to have seen him in small venues as in America he can sell out a stadium in 10 mins. I like a song with a story to tell with great musicians playing, I do find some of todays chart country music a bit bland, but not Brad, also like Rodney Crowell, Alison Kraus , we've also seen Alison Kraus union station live, both fantastic in concert.

Could have been so much more, first 6 tracks start it off to be a hell of a ride, then it seems Brad loses the keys and doesnt really get going again.

This is a fantastic album!!

There is not one bad track on it+This Is Country Music is so clever-how many songwriters would put the titles of other artists songs within their own to pay tribute to other great country stars?!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music, provocative title 29 April 2014
By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Irrespective of what the charts or the country music authorities say, or even what Brad says in the title track, it has a very different feel to it from most of the country music I listen to. In that title track, Brad defines country music by the topics addressed in the songs, claiming that only country music addresses such topics. I listen to plenty of non-country music too, and I've heard some of these topics addressed in other types of music - perhaps not as often, and perhaps not in the same way, but country music does not have a monopoly. For me, it is the music that defines the style of music, and while Brad Paisley makes great music (hence 5 stars), the only track here that I recognize as being recorded country style is Life's railway to heaven (featuring Marty Stuart, Sheryl Crow and Carl Jackson). The rest of the album is very enjoyable in its way and certainly has a country flavour, but no more than that.

The title track was a #2 country hit in America, and was followed up the same charts by Old Alabama (with Alabama) and Remind me (with Carrie Underwood), both of which made #1. The album itself made #2 on the American pop album charts.

This is a great album, but I'll file it with the rest of my collection of pop and rock music.
