Book Description

This is Advertising addresses the changes that are occurring within advertising, from the perspective of key figures within the industry. It will provide a useful, informative guide to some of the latest developments within advertising. The book will be a combination of commentary from leading industry figures accompanied by a rich selection of visuals to explain what is being discussed. The book will be split into five chapters, which deal with the main themes relevant to the advertising industry today: Digital, Branded, Ambient, Integrated and Self-Initiated. Each chapter will contain a series of case studies which will be presented through a short text, illustrations and captions. An overall introduction to the book and to each section will offer an overview of the subject by the author. Ten interviews by a selection of leading advertising figures will offer a number of different perspectives, as well as various feature quotes throughout. The book will be visually impressive while also providing some solid information about the significant changes taking place in advertising now. The target audience for the book is people already working within advertising, students and anyone with a broader interest in the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hits the Spot 16 Aug 2011
By M. Harrison TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
For anyone who enjoys creativity, it's hard to avoid the sense that among the clutter and clammer of the digital revolution, there's some startling work taking place - much of it in the service of selling. Sometimes viral, sometimes direct, no one seems to be pushing the disruptive and delighting potential of digital media further than those with a brand to land. The trouble is: how to separate the creative gems from the mucky pitch? Thankfully, here's a book that does it for you - and having extracated the diamonds, it puts them in a beautiful setting.

With 'This is Advertising' Eliza Williams has created a perfect primer for anyone interested in visual media, particularly in the digital realm. She has skillfully put together a book which is at once a text book for the revolution in advertising form and philosophy that has come with the internet, and yet is also a gorgeous celebration of creative ingenuity and mischief that would grace the coolest of coffee tables.

Williams is satisfied to be a facilitator for the messages that have come from advertising's new medium, without interjecting herself into the story. Her text is objective, concise and informative, free of all jargon and pretension; and yet she is also able to access a formidable role call of the industry's top creatives - interviews with which are interspersed sparingly through the book. And above all the words are sufficient to be enlightening without detracting from the primacy of the dazzling and beguiling images.

I know of some of the campaigns illustrated here; those who work in advertising will know of more. But with just short of 100 campaigns featured, everyone is sure to find new discoveries - and, more importantly, find new inspirations. This book may be neatly and thoughfully put together, but it is bursting with ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring look at the new advertising world 24 July 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a great and really visual guide to some of the most exciting things happening in advertising now - the chapters on digital, branded, ambient, integrated and self-initiated really bring alive why advertising is now so much more than just a TV campaign.

I found the examples chosen to be a really illuminating mix, from the lauded and well-known (HBO Voyeur, Cadbury's Gorilla etc.) to much quirkier, smaller campaigns from around the globe (many of which were new to me, despite the fact that I've worked in advertising for 10+ years). Also good are the interviews with leading industry figures (Alex Bogusky, Erik Kessels, Robert Saville etc.) which give a real insight into how campaigns came about and where advertising might be heading.

I'd recommend this book to people working in the industry now (a great way to look beyond your day job and be inspired by what's happening around the world) and to people just starting out in their careers (the perfect pre-interview read).

"This is Advertising" surveys advertising from the past ten years, looking at the creative work that moved campaigns beyond posters, print and TV. By focusing on how the work is made and including detailed interviews alongside high quality campaign images, the book hits just the right balance between a practical sourcebook and a theoretical overview. A great source of inspiration and reference for students and practitioners.
