5.0 out of 5 stars The high point of thirtysomething 19 May 2011
Format:DVD
It's fantastic that after so mnay years Thirtysomething is available on DVD (having missed the videotape age completely I think). The third season is IMHO the high point of the show as the impact of the ad agency DAA, and its CEO Miles Drentel in particular, shows up in the lives of the main characters. This theme takes over the show, moving it away from the original idea of close examination of very small events in ordinary lives. However, it became a better show for the change. Extras are commentaries and an intro item which is a dialogue between the producers - all very interesting the the devotee of the show like me. Reasonable quality video remembering the show was produced 20 years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars 30Something - rolling back the years!! 30 July 2011
By Steve.J
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I guess that you need to have been around when this drama was originally aired (in the very late 80's) to really appreciate it being available on DVD, but if you are looking for a drama series about life in your thirties and have not seen it before then you could do worse than to give it a look. Yes, it is a U.S drama, with some references which won't mean anything to U.K audiences, but there is lot of it that is still relevant today. Families, jobs, careers, relationships etc. all of them get examined here. If you can, watch the 4 series in order, as they do build on the previous one. At times it gets a little bit self obsessed, but hey! that's how we were back then - and no apologies!! Overall, this was a great series, yes, the odd episode failed to deliver, but I have never come across any drama series that did not have the odd hiccup. At least give season 1 a go, even if you have to buy it second hand. Don't be fooled by some of the offers on EBay though, for the complete 4 seasons, they are copies made from the original VHS video tapes and are not brilliant quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars STILL RELEVANT 23 May 2010
By ireadabookaday - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
It would be wrong to think that a tv show that so personified specific time and culture would not still be relevant-this is a TV show that holds up. How many recent broadcast tv dramas will do the same?

I was twentysomething when it was broadcast, and while my life could not have been less like those of the characters, I enjoyed it. As a fortysomething(due to the long delay in this series coming out on DVD) I still enjoy it. Strong writing, characters, and acting ensure that this does not feel dated( though it is amusing to relive the fashions of the time and see how big the cell phones were).

I can't comment on the extras- I rarely ever watch/listen to them- I prefer to let the work speak for itself. The quality of the video and audio were just fine on my non- HD tv. The booklet is worth looking at only for the hilariously banal one line descriptions of the episodes.

I was surprised by how much of this show seemed familiar after all this time- more stuck in my memory than I would have guessed, but I related to it somewhat differently than when I was younger. This is a quality tv show that has stood the test of time - if you liked it then, rewatch it now, and if you dismissed it as yuppies whining back then, give it another try.

Now can we get China Beach on DVD?

5.0 out of 5 stars Season Three - Thirtysomething 24 Mar 2010
By Book and music lover "Jane" - Published on Amazon.com

This is an excellent season full of great episodes between Patricia Wettig and Timothy Busfield (as well as many cameos - Mariska Hargitay, Patricia Heaton, Angela Bassett, Stanley Tucci, Tess Harper, and others). Great episodes in general. Enjoyable commentary by Peter Horton and Patricia Wettig. One more thing, after going back and visiting these episodes it's obvious that much of television today pales in comparison to the quality of thirtysomething's writing, the characters, and the show in general. I absolutely LOVE going back and watching these episodes and hearing the commentary about how the scenes were filmed, the actors/directors' memories of the episode and the writing, etc. (I would like to hear commentary by Polly Draper though, maybe on season 4?)

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome at 40 something 21 Oct 2010

I never missed this show in my 20's and they are even better to watch now in my 40's. The quality of writing and acting is awesome, and the production quality of these shows was well worth the wait to see again. The current line of TV shows should take some lessons from this series.
