One of Britain’s greatest ever footballers, Bobby Lennox epitomises an era in which Celtic were the best and most successful football club in the UK. In May 1967, he and his fellow Lisbon Lions achieved footballing immortality when they lifted the European Cup – the first British side to do so. Lennox’s 300 goals for Celtic and Scotland make him the second-highest goalscorer in Celtic’s history and the highest since the Second World War. With the Scottish national side, Lennox famously scored the second goal in Scotland’s stunning 3-2 victory over England at Wembley in 1967, when the Scots became the first country to defeat the then world champions.
In this definitive autobiography, Lennox recounts with his famous dry wit and openness, his part in these extraordinary achievements, revealing aspects of his career which, until now, he has never previously made public.

This biography is from a player who was not only a fathful servant to his club & one of the most effective strikers to play for either Celtic or Scotland but was also a member of the famous Lisbon Lions.Bobby Lennox's era was a time before the game was so heavily influenced (corrupted?) by players' massive wages & egoes, wall to wall tv coverage & still belonged to the people. Bobby is, in effect, a working class hero. The book details his dedication to training & his continual efforts to improve his game. All the obvious points are covered, Lisbon 67, the consecutive titles & other trophies, the break up of the Lions but there is also some insight into how Jock Stein operated & the cynicism of South American opposition in the World Club Championship. There is also a good index of Bobby's playing honours which makes impressive & interesting reading; if you ever saw him play, you must winder why he won so few caps for his country. Of course, this book will be immediately attractive to Celtic fans but should also appeal to anyone who remembers the game from the 60's & 70's or for those who wonder what the game was like then.

You don't have to be a Celtic fan (from the 60's) to enjoy this book. This is a good football book about a great player playing for a great club when football was a great game & hadn't been seduced by TV, massive wages & superstar ego's. Pretty much the biography of a working class hero. Sure enough, there were still lots of issues to contend with like the interfering, patrician directors at Celtic, the unbelievably cynical approach to the game by some of the Spanish & South American opposition & Bobby Lennox shows how he was effected by these, & other challenges, with candour. Obviously Jock Stein is heavily featured within the chapters but, like the other main topics, Bobby handles the subject in an objective & honest way. What comes through is how much of a one club player he really was & how the Lisbon Lions, possibly the greatest servants to the club, were poorly treated until it was almost too late. The book itself is well written in an easy style & also has an interesting breakdown of the statistics of Bobby's career. I've never understood why he won so few caps for his country. Highly recommended & a good partner to "Jock Stein, The Definitive Biography" by Archie Macpherson.
