Book Description

Thirtiestyle is a fascinating and colourful guide to all aspects of decoration and design in the 1930s home. Packed with full colour illustrations and photographs, the book shows the choices available to consumers during this period. Katie Arber has drawn on MoDA's extensive collection of retail and trade catalogues, domestic magazines and household manuals to produce a vibrant and beautifully illustrated guide to the 1930s interior.

No other guide is as comprehensive in its coverage of the features of a home. Detailed sections include bathrooms and kitchens; fixtures and fittings; furniture; wallpapers and paints; carpets, cushions and upholstery; lighting; fireplaces and heating; and finishing touches. Each area is covered in comprehensive detail in a way that is highly informative while at the same time hugely enjoyable to read.

No other publication available in the UK brings together the whole range of decorative styles that were on sale in the thirties. The book makes clear what should be obvious - not everyone had Clarice Cliff china or stepped tiled fireplaces. Just like today there was a choice of products and styles available to the consumer and Katie Arber's beautifully illustrated and organised book brings the era vividly to life. It's a book that I read cover to cover in one sitting, but it's also a book to dip into over and over again for anyone interested in any aspect of thirties interior design.

Small pamphlet like book with no real depth. A few pictures which are useful, hardly worth the trouble
