This book continues in the same vein as Prof. Zhang's previous book with the translators and editors keeping up the same high standards.
The book, along with the DVD, teaches another two foundation forms: Thirteen Movements to Stretch the Body and Make it More Supple (Yin Ti Ling Rou Shi San Shi) and Guiding and Harmonising Energy to Regulate the Breath (Dao Qi Ling He Tiao Xi Gong)
Again, the book has been faithfully translated from Prof. Zhang's original texts with additions from and commentaries from some of his top students and coaches. It assumes some small knowledge of the theories of yin and yang, the five elements, internal organs and meridians but not too much and a lot of information is given to enable the reader to research the material further if needed (point names and numbers, names in Chinese and English etc).
Guiding and Harmonising Energy is similar in performance to the exercises in the first book, where the aim is to nourish the body. Thirteen Movements however has some tough stretches to follow (I know from experience, having been taught these by Gordon Faulkner. He asked at one workshop in Swansea, "Have you done the Daoyin Stretching Routines?" I said, "I'm not sure." Gordon replied, "In that case you haven't, you'd have remembered them otherwise!"). When I was taught the stretches, we held them for much longer than they're held in the DVD.
The 13 movement's routine is great but do be gentle with yourself and work to your body's limits while practicing it. Separate appendices give more technical details on the 13 movements form later in the book.
The DVD clarifies any confusion you may have with text and photos. By the way I find the descriptions fine but I've done the moves before so I appreciate that complete novices may find difficulty in following the book but that's the beauty of the DVD you can exactly how it's done!
There are also a number of appendices covering some background information on such subjects as the Dan Tian or Cinnabar Field located in the lower abdomen, acupuncture points used in the sequences and abdominal breathing..
Both sequences presented in the book are easy to learn.
Singing Dragon are to be congratulated on this series of books and I look forward to seeing more of Prof. Zhang's work published in English.
