Just try keeping your feet still ! 11 Aug 2000

I have been a fan of Johnny Clegg for about 14 years now and this album remains a real favourite. 'Scatterlings of Africa' and 'Ring on her Finger' are irresistibly catchy dance songs and 'Asimbonanga' is a beautiful tribute to Mandela (then imprisoned) and other protesters. Songs are often a mix of English and Zulu, the lyrics are of consistent high quality and combine brilliantly with great tunes. I saw Johnny Clegg and Savuka live in the late '80s - the best live act I have ever seen. Please tour again! If you have yet to discover Johnny Clegg (not too surprising if you haven't because he is not promoted to my knowledge) then get started on this album and get singing and dancing!

The Best of South Africa 15 Nov 1999

An excellent combination of South African harmony and modern day pop, this is a brilliant album for any collection. (An understanding of Zulu helps, but is not a requisite!) Think Ladysmith Black Mambazo harmonies overlaid with great lyrics and, in most cases, an upbeat and fun tempo. "Scatterlings of Africa" and "Great Heart" are brilliant. They get your blood racing and your feet tapping almost subconsciously. "Asimbonanga" is a very stirring tribute to Nelson Mandela when he was still in prison on Robben Island. Really great stuff for all music tastes.

Massive respect for Johnny Clegg and Savuka 7 Dec 2010

During the apartheid era, it was illegal for inter-racial bands to perform live in south Africa or be heard on the state owned radio. However, the suppressive atmosphere of apartheid South Africa did not stop Savuka from creating powerful and uplifting music that makes your heart soar and feel happy to be alive.

There's a real feeling of cohesion to this album. A wonderful succession of songs, from the aptly titled opener of Are You Ready to the closer Don't walk away. All in all a collection of great songs, with the spiritual imagery of Great Heart, the political Asimbonanga, calling for the release of Mandela, and Scatterlings of Africa, which highlights the common African ancestry of us all. If you are new to Johnny Clegg, this is the place to start.
