5.0 out of 5 stars A really good collection 10 July 2012
By Mole TOP 500 REVIEWER

This is the third collection in this series, and it is a really good collection of short stories. The last few stories in the book are slightly longer than the others; and the last story is a really impressive novella, looking at how we might choose to define sentience at some stage in the future.

Good SF is not just about the technology, but looks at how it might be seen to affect people; and in particular, moral conflict is a great way to demonstrate this. This collection offers some really interesting ideas from some of the best known names within the genre and the whole collection has much to commend it.

If you are not into SF, then this might be a useful introduction to some really excellent examples of the kind of solid writing that can be found.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value 7 Jun 2012
By Mondoro TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This third collection is well up to the standard of the Megapack series, featuring many familar names from the golden age of science fiction. Most heart-warming is the concluding novella, H Beam Piper's 'Little Fuzzy', which looks at the meaning of the word 'sapience' and the danger of making over-hasty assumptions about any new species that humanity may encounter in its spread across the galaxy.

Other stories range from J T Bone's traditional spaceeship yarn about courage and its meaning; John Russell Fearne's explanation for the sudden disappearance of Atlantis; the beatifully-written fantasy 'Angels and Moths'; the poignant, often anthologised, 'Star Mother'; and E C Tubb's cautionary tale 'Jackpot', which indicates that gifts from 'natives' aren't always as they seem.... The only story that doesn't quite work, despite the range of its imagination, is the anticlimactic 'Second Landing'.

Again, a considerable bargain and very satisfying read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Third science fiction megapack 11 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am always on the hunt for titles that will provide an easy and enjoyable read for times when I just want to unwind and not have to work too hard at my reading.
This composition of short stories, some of which are actually a good length, has achieved this very well. It is a good but easy read with some stories in there that the authors should consider adapting into fuller volumes.

If, like me, you grew up reading shorter Asimov and Heinlen stories in comic booke then this collection is well worth a visit, you will enjoy it I promise.
Being a kindle collection it also represents great value for money and will be staying on my kindle for when I fancy a "dip" read in future.

A book that you can pick up and read a story in about 15 minutes. Some of the ideas very dated and some of the stories quite old. Read more

A decent enough read, diverse subject matter and very light just what you need in bedtime reading. I would say it is a bit early SciFi genre, but enjoyable none the less
