What`s new with this Ace Records re-issue of 'Third And Main' is that I was fortunate enough to track down both John Alden (Jonathan) and Sandy Lee Bashaw (Leigh) and tell their story. Previously, very little was known about this cult folk duo. Unlike the American version (which has no notes), this UK reissue CD includes my 2200+ words sleevenote, plus graphics that include both rare pics and a 60s colour poster. The duo`s story offers a fascinating insight into the New York folk scene of 1967 as the music began to develop into folk rock and the early hippie movement. Though some of the duo`s songs are `of their time`, others, like "Tapestry", "Winding River" and "Summer Sorrow", are impossibly haunting and beautiful, matching the best offerings by such contemporaries as Ian & Sylvia and Richard & Mimi Farina.
