5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the series so far! 12 Mar 2012
By The Demon Librarian TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
This is definitely my favourite storyline of the series so far. It's a culmination of bits and pieces of story threads we've been getting over the last two books. And again, it's proven my developing theory that when you make someone laugh and feel all happy and comfortable, it only hits them that much harder -like a sledge hammer to the gut harder- when something ...unsettling happens, because they're just not expecting it.

I cried. This book made me cry!

Charley Davidson, aka the Grim Reaper, aka Private Detective extraordinaire, is a very funny lady, as anyone who's read books one and two will know. Charley Davidson after nearly two weeks of trying to stay awake because she's scared of what Reyes Farrows might do to her in her sleep, is freaking hilarious! She may or may not be slightly more than human, but 13 days of no sleep will catch up with the best of us. There's only so much coffee in the world. This makes for some of the funniest dialogue scenes I have ever read. Ever.

I really enjoyed the main mystery this time. Charley is hired in her PI capacity to find a missing wife. Again. But it's a very different story this time. She also gets delivered a prophesy of sorts at the beginning of the book which makes you very worried about exactly whom it involves throughout the rest of the story. And even though you know it's coming, it really doesn't lessen the blow.

Did I mention I cried?

I think the other reason it's my favourite is the further development of Reyes' character. I felt like I got to see him more as a real person. Whether or not I liked all that I saw...well that's a different question all together, isn't it. All I know is I want more. Lots more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cracking Reaper Fun 21 Mar 2012
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
Upon the conclusion of the second title, I really couldn't wait to get my hands upon the third excerpt. As with the others, it has a gripping lead character, a wonderful set of twists and turns which when backed with an author with a great idea of where the overall arc is leading, leaves the reader not only demanding but salivating for the next part.

The writing is crisp, the prose wonderfully devilish and when backed with dialogue that you can really get behind, makes this title a special one to enjoy. Finally add a character who's back on form after the hiccup in the previous title and all in, it's a book that you really can't put down. Great stuff.

3.0 out of 5 stars DOA... 5 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
My complaints for THIRD GRAVE DEAD AHEAD are pretty much the same as they were for book two; I love the mysteries and exploring Charley's relationships with her friends [especially poor old Garrett] and family. Unfortunately Charley herself can be annoying with her constant selfishness and attempts at humour, whilst Reyes and his bad boy/anti hero/alpha combo thing he has going on is such a boring turn-off. I dread his character turning up on the pages.

The entire romance that has become a big part of this series is just so shallow - Reyes threatens people with death etc, but flash Charley some flesh and practically force himself on her and all is forgiven. Charley's brain switches off whenever he shows up, and the attraction on her part seems purely based on his looks. As well as the shallowness, it is a borderline abusive relationship - by book six I'm expecting her to have to begin to make up stories about falling downstairs and walking into cupboard doors - their relationship seems that grim and unsettling to read. How the hell am I meant to root for such a toxic pairing?

I want to love this series, but Charley, Reyes, and the whole tragic romance the author is aiming for is DOA, and it just distracts me from the other subplots. Also - the author wastes too much space this time repeating events from the first two books.

Its really quite frustrating; the ingredients for a fantastic series are all here, but the author seems unsure of what kind of series she actually wants to write. She is trying to cram a bit of everything into the book, but ending up leaving the mysteries and fantasy sides rather thin whilst overplaying the 'romantic' elements. The result is a uneven balance, with a ton of forced one liners to wade through. I'd only recommend this to readers who are primary looking for that Bad Boy romance, rather then those of us who are looking for a gritty urban based fantasy series.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome, awesome, awesome 6 April 2012
Ok so you are reading my review. First of all thank you for taking the time to read my ramblings I really do appreciate it. Secondly you are probably reading it because either you have read the previous two books in this series and you are thinking about getting this book or you have recently read this book and you are checking out what other people think about it. If for some reason you are reading this and you have not read any of the Charley Davidson books I implore you to please read them. Now I am guilty of this too, when people recommend books to me I swear I will read them I sometimes even go out and buy the book only for it to sit on my tbr pile. Eventually I will read it and it will be as good as what people say. But please go and get the first book in this series right now and start reading it straight away.....yes people in my opinion this series is that good. There will be spoilers from books 1 and 2 ahead so you have been warned if you continue reading.

I have read all three books in this series one after the other in some kind of Charley binge. I am addicted to them. It is my new favourite UF series, Darynda Jones is my new favourite author and Charley is my new favourite kick ass heroine. After the ending of book 2 I was very curious to see how events would play out. Charley had bound Reyes to his corporeal body and he was mad...big time mad. Having refused Charley access to see him in prison it was with some surprise when she gets the phone call that he wants to meet with her. Charley has only met with Reyes in his actual physical body once, well three times but two of those he was unconscious. So when she gets to meet him in the flesh I was hyperventilating with excitement.
