Basically, this book is about a family hostage situation with a day wrapped into 460 pages. A seemingly stable and well-regarded doctor fears, correctly, that his wife is being unfaithful and all hell breaks loose in his home.

A lot of what is good in an Iles book is here in this novel and, in particular, his sound writing style and social insights. But the book is way too long and filled with irrelevant material. It should have been 100 to 150 pages shorter. It is full of suspense, but the characterizations are weaker than usual. It is thus very difficult to side with anyone during the ordeal.

In summary, Iles has done much better and needs to avoid a writing style which is far too full for the story he is delivering (it's not the first time I have made this comment and note that other reviewers have suggested the same). 7/10

The plot features a highly respected doctor, Warren Shields, living with his attractive wife, 2 children and a dog in an affluent area. In the space of a few hours in one day all that he believes in disintegrates around him. As he loses control, the police move in and a seige situation occurs.

Greg Iles is a master at taking what a seems a straight forward concept and creating a thriller through spins, twists and surprises throughout the whole novel. This was so fast paced and compelling I consciously had to slow down my reading pace! Yet at no time is the action or the characters unbelievable.

This is an exciting read but it also contains deep characters that you can dislike, like, sympathise with, be angry with etc at the same time. Iles seems to have a sharp awareness of human nature and personality that he transfers into his characters to make them well drawn and realistic.

Greg Iles' work is a must read.

Though it is true to say that this does not hold the same gripping content as turning angel or dead sleep i did really enjoy it- the characters are plausible and likeable and the story rides like a train crash to its end. Yes there has been better but i have also read alot worse... give it a go... its matter of personal taste i suppose.

four star thriller
awarding just the one star is a travesty - this is a finely constructed thriller. The 'plot' - such as it is- is essentially laid out for the reader from the off, so Iles' talent... Read more
