Book Description

5 Mar 2009

Why was Liverpool like a living football museum? How do you improve the probability of saving a penalty? What's the difference between an 'improver' manager and an 'importer' manager? Is the sigmoid curve the most important tool a footballer can have? And what can we learn from Victorian philanthropists?

These are just some of the questions that Brad Friedel addresses in his intelligent, observational style as he thinks outside the box and takes us across continents and inside football in a way that only he can.

Goalkeepers have an unusual view of the world, but Brad Friedel's is more unusual than most. Not surprising, considering he travelled nearly one million miles in a five-year battle to win a work permit to play in the Premier League. More than this, he got an education. First as a student at UCLA and then travelling the world earning $35 a day against the likes of Brazil and Argentina; living and playing in Denmark, Turkey and the USA; and developing his own ideas and views for his football academy.

This uplifting and inspirational story takes you deep into the world of Premier League football and in doing so puts the glamour into true perspective. Brad Friedel has little time for the materialistic culture which surrounds professional football. Because he believes in loyalty, he has turned down lucrative contracts and took a 60 per cent pay cut to join Blackburn Rovers. Yet he is one to grasp opportunity and he made a surprise move to Aston Villa at the age of 37.

He is a visionary footballing philanthropist who has more interest in changing the world than changing his image. This book shows there is another way for footballers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your average footballers memoir 26 Mar 2009
By Bantam Dave TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
There are two often stated football adages; one is that you have to be a little crazy to be a goalkeeper and the other is that goalkeepers are `different'. After reading Brad Friedel's autobiography it is evident that whilst he is not the slightest bit crazy he is a goalkeeper that is definitely different.

Thinking Outside the Box reveals Brad Fiedel to be a deep thinker, who is possibly as far removed from the average fan on the streets conception of a modern day footballer as it is possible to get. This makes this a very unusual football autobiography, unlike any I have read before.

Anybody that picks up this book expecting to read the standard anecdotes about his fellow footballer's indiscretions will be disappointed because that is not his style. In fact, I can only recall him being critical of three people, and one of these, David James only mildly so, even though he chose not to speak to Friedel after he signed for Liverpool, believing he was bought to take his first team place. Whilst most of us would have considered James to have been behaving in a petulant, childlike manner, Friedel doesn't; instead he writes that whilst he disagreed with James' actions he understood his feelings.

Friedel starts with his early days as a goalkeeper at University in the States, where he proved to be an exceptional goalkeeper, and goes on to tell us about the frustrations of his struggle to get a work permit which would allow him to fulfil his dream to play for a top club in England. These chapters are all both enlightening and interesting, giving the reader an insight into both the massively popular University sport scene in the States and the teething problems of US football, which whilst ever improving, is still a minority sport.

Whilst it won't be to everybody's taste, I considered this to be a very good book, written on a much higher intellectual level than the norm. I have to admit though, that I found the closing chapters, which are about Friedels philosophy on goalkeeping and his off the field ventures, to be a little too heavy going.

Brad Friedel is a good pro and a fine example for any young goalkeeper. He has an interesting story to tell and demonstrates a lot more depth to his character than most of his contempories.
