Product Description

Product Description

In order to design a building with a sensuous connection to life, one must think in a way that goes far beyond form and construction. This book, whose first edition has been out of print for years, has been expanded to include three new essays: Does Beauty Have a Form? The Magic of the Real, and Light in the Landscape. Not only has the book received a new typography by Hannele Gronlund; it has also been freshly illustrated throughout with new color photographs of Zumthor's new home and studio in Haldenstein, taken specially for this edition by Laura Padgett herself. In his texts, Peter Zumthor expresses his motivation in designing these buildings, which speak to our feeling and understanding in so many ways and possess a powerful and unmistakable presence and personality.

3.0 out of 5 stars An architect's voice, 9 Mar 2009
By Artsreadings (Edinburgh, UK) - See all my reviews
This book may be titled "Thinking Architecture", it does not give hard theoretical food for thought. It rather gives a good example of an architect writing about his very own architectural practice: how previous experience has shaped it, and in what directions the reason and thinking goes when approaching a new building project.

It sounds as a good example for young architecture professionals who are keen on crafting their own professional voice. Indeed, this book has the feeling of a printed blog, with a compilation of personal thoughts and experience typical of the Web 2.0.

In addition to the texts, uncaptioned architectural photographs also give a good set of examples for beginning architects to think about the imaging of their architectural outputs, and the role of the photographed image in the promotion (intellectual as well as commercial) of their work.
