Product Description

Product Description

Philosophers certainly like to make life sound awfully complicated. But is philosophy really so complicated? And is it really as irrelevant as it sometimes seems? "I Think, Therefore I Am" is the ideal way to take the fear out of philosophy. Written in an accessible and highly entertaining style, it explains how and why philosophy began, and how, from Greek democracy to Communism, the ways in which we live, learn, argue, vote and even spend our money have their origins in philosophical thought.

Philosophy is one of those subjects you have to teach yourself in the UK and I cannot think of a more interesting, entertaining way of starting off than with this book. It breaks down the subject into easy-to-handle pieces that are easy to understand, even when the concepts are complex and taxing. It also follows the history of thought and ideas by starting off with the very earliest philosophers and bringing us up to date with more recent philosophical arguments.
Anyone wishing to know more about the subject will be hard-pushed to find a better, more accessible or user-friendly book than this. Five stars.

This book is obviously aimed at the complete novice and the style of writing suits the cause well. However if your looking for a book from which you can actually learn some serious philosophy I would suggest buying something else.

This book is very much a "pub knowledge" book in that it comprises of small interesting facts as opposed to explanations and introductions to philosophical theories. The blurb on the back of the book further proves my point as it states - "Quips, quotes and conundrums to help you sound knowledgeable at diner parties".

don't get me wrong this book is competently written and well presented but I feel it is a bit ambiguous as to what it is going to provide the reader.

So if you just want some intellectual snippets to use at the pub and impress your friends than you cant go wrong with this book.
But if you are actually interested in learning about Philosophy then I would strongly suggest buying something else.

All I needed 16 Dec 2010

I thought this book was great. Well written with all the key stuff. OK - it doesn't go into depth but it filled in lots of gaps for me and introduced me to lots of philosophers I'd never heard of. This is a subject I've been wanting to explore and this book gave me a fab introduction. And not just for dinner parties.

According to Plato, Socrates always claimed that he himself knew nothing. Rather than imposing his own views on others, he challenged people to defend the logical basis for their ideas, the theory being that this would force them to confront contradictions in their own arguments. Only then, when false logic had been stripped away by a process of elimination, would people accept their ignorance and seek universally applicable definitions for the virtues fundamental to human life, in the process revealing a deeper moral good. "e;
