5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for making maths fun again. 5 Aug 2005
Format:Hardcover
If school has squashed any fun or interest out of maths like it did for me and my children - give this book a try. It starts off a bit like how Waldorf schools teach early maths, showing how it all started with ancient counting techniques. From there off you go to learn about Phi (made a little bit famous by 'The Da Vinci Code'), Pi, chaos theory and so much more - there are some practical things to do suggested throughout the book too. Brings colour, quite literally back to numbers!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book! 10 May 2006
Format:Hardcover
I found this book incredibly interesting, and I'm no maths fan - I leafed through it while babysitting for a friend who has a son of 9, then I bought the book for myself! It is so well written and extremely funny in parts. I would recommend this book to anyone of any age. I guarentee you will learn something new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Think of a Number by Johnny Ball 30 Mar 2007
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I was fortunate enough to see Mr. Ball live at Yeovil College 2 years ago and bought this book on the strength of that. Maths was a real struggle for me but Johnny made everything easy to understand and fun! Now my own children can have the same input with this marvellous book. Designed for anyone and everyone - brightly coloured and brimming with Johnny's fun personality, this book will help anyone to rediscover their relationship with maths and who knows, maybe even build on it. I am studying to become a maths teacher and Johnny Ball is certainly part of my inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent fun with numbers 26 Jun 2011
By oj
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am 9 and I think it is very funny. I have learnt that if we didn't have numbers then we wouldn't be able to talk about size, height, quantity, weight etc. I'm still reading it and really enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making Mathematics Memorable and Marvellous 14 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a wonderful book that draws the reader in and keeps them hooked. It is suitable for anyone interested in mathematics and is likely to convert those who aren't!
It is superbly presented and is split into four (2 squared and also 2 + 2) sections; The origin of numbers, Magic numbers, Shapes and The World of Maths. The illustrations, diagrams and photos complement the text immensely. Highlights include the section on big numbers which includes the number of sand grains needed to fill the Universe, the entry on Pi (recently worked out to 1.24 trillion decimal places!), the feature on polygons, the pages on the 5 Platonic solids and the brilliant article on the art of maths which includes art by Escher, Carpaccio and Holbein.
