Book Description

17 May 2004 Marlowe Diabetes Library
There are dozens of books about managing diabetes, but none focuses specifically on using insulin. Now, in Think Like a Pancreas, certified diabetes educator and type 1 insulin user Gary Scheiner gives readers everything they need to know to "think like a pancreas," i. e. , to successfully master the art of matching insulin to the body's ever-changing needs. A comprehensive, supremely practical guide free of medical mumbo jumbo, Think Like a Pancreas discusses day-to-day blood glucose control and monitoring; measuring and matching insulin to carbohydrate intake; the pluses and minuses of different insulin-delivery methods; hypoglycemia; exercise; the impact of emotions, stress, and illness; and the dozens of other issues that everyone taking insulin needs to master. A book that is long overdue, this first-ever, indispensable, all-in-one resource will enlighten and inspire the four million people whose lives and well-being depend on daily insulin intake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Think Like a Pancreas 16 Aug 2007
Format:Paperback
This is a must for every who is diabetic regardless of type 1, type 2, recently diagnosed or diagnosed 40years ago as I was.
It explains how insulin works, why the pancreas packed up and tips on how to adjust insulin levels.
I couldn't put it down _ its written in a non technical friendly manner.
Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Think like a pancreas 5 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
This is a great book. Unfortunately, it is written in American and you have to interpret some of the words. However, it is a very good guide for anyone wanting to get a grip on their diabetic control. Although all types of diabetes and all control regimes are covered, the book is most useful for those on muliple insulin injections (basal bolus regime) or those using an insulin pump. Much of the thinking in the book is now being taken up by forward-thinking clinics, but (perhaps) not most GPs. It is interesting to read the original script for some of the advice I've been hearing! Do buy it. It is very helpful and practical, with just the right amount of science to support the advice. It may well make you question the way you've been doing things! And for me, it worked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Building on your knowledge 30 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
When my youngest son was diagnosed with Type 1, there was a great deal to learn quickly. This book has been a great tool to build on the information provided by doctors and nurses, and a helpful reference to have on hand for day-to-day guidance. Now that another of my children has been diagnosed, this book and the associated web site have helped de-mystify the condition, and make dealing with diabetes more of an every day routine, than a scary unknown! I would, (and have) recommended it to diabetics and their families, teachers and medical professionals!!

At last here is someone who writes in an understandable and straightforward manner about this chronic condition. The insight he provides and the guidance on managing your diabetes is enlightening and life changing. At last here is someone who explains the relationship between carbohydrates and blood glucose levels; who doesn't advocate using carbs as the basis of the Type 2 diabetic diet, and who presents the facts clearly based on personal experience. After years of increasing medication, both tablets and insulin, rising blood sugar levels, increasing weight and the start of circulation and nerve issues, four weeks of following the advice in this book has resulted in weight loss, halved blood sugar levels, and a reduction of insulin use by 55%. This book should be compulsory reading for anyone who advises diabetics on diet, medication and health matters; it would certainly make the 'inspeak', nonsense, and mumbo jumbo easier to understand.

As a type 2 on insulin this book filled in many of the gaps in my education and helped me deal with a number of problems, I wished that I had known about it when I first went on insulin. I would, and have, reccommended it to fellow sufferers.
