Before Whitney there was Cissy Houston! Produced and arranged by Michael Zager, a disco genius of the 1970s, Think It Over is a nice mix of dance numbers and soul ballads.
The title track is a real stunner, a disco masterpiece with a powerful hook and rousing vocals. Love Don't Hurt People is a gentle and tuneful ballad with an impressive orchestral arrangement and moments of great vocal virtuosity. Somebody Should Have Told Me is an uptempo disco ballad and After You a slow song with beautiful piano.
Warning - Danger is a real disco stomper with a marvelous rhythm break whilst I Just Want To Be With You is a soulful torch song and Umbrella Song has a calypso feel. Sometimes is another torch song and I Won't Be The One another uptempo disco ballad.
This CD release contains extra tracks which make it value for money. Although never a big star like Donna Summer or Gloria Gaynor, Cissy Houston had her moments. I recommend Think It Over to those who are nostalgic for the disco era.

I was lucky enough to catch Cissy and her more famous daughter sing live together in London some years ago, and there was no doubt to my ears that Cissy had the superior vocals. I later met Whitney (see the Amazon book, God's Other Children, A London Memoir), but sadly, Cissy was resting a bandaged ankle back at their hotel. I mentioned how much I loved her mother, and in particular, this album, which finds a teen Whitney on backing (- but don't expect to hear her. This is her mother's album!). This is a flawless collection of great songs and performances by Cissy; from the Billboard disco floor fillers, Think It Over, Warning, Danger, and Somebody Should Have Told Me, through to the more laid back, Sometimes, Love Don't hurt People, and the totally gorgeous ballads, After You, and I Just Want To Be With You. This worthy reissue is further boosted by four original extended remixes, which were issued on vinyl in their own right, back in the disco days. They fit here very nicely indeed.

Cissy Houston is an exceptional singer, who was perhaps "too black" sounding to match her daughter's superstar success and radios limited ability to handle such awesome talent. The tragic loss of her daughter is a loss for us all, but we can take some comfort in the treasure chest of gems, this album included, that both mother and daughter have gifted to us. RIP, Nippy!

There's nothing to think about, buy this CD, today!
