4.0 out of 5 stars Family Tree Maker performance 5 Feb 2009

Very well designed software - able to capture all the details that I want to retain. Only problem is that it does not always save what I entered - I have had to dig out my source documents several times to enter information - this is very time-consuming and frustrating.. I claims to autosave, but clearly it does not.

2.0 out of 5 stars Style over substance 11 Jan 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase
Being a much satisfied customer of the 2005 incarnation of this program, I looked forward to the improved functionality of the newer version.

Oh dear, what a dissapointment I had, when after loading it up, it let me down from the start. The 2005 version is far clearer in both its style, and clarity, with the basic screen being far too crowded. This is a case of the makers trying to add too many functions, to what after all is a family tree program.

The real shame is the loss of the "family" view from the 2005 version, instead supplanting it with a crowded "tree" view.

One nice thing added, is the "relationship" box, which gives you an accurate idea how you are related to the person highlighted.

Most people approaching their tree for the first time, and using this program will no doubt dissagree with me, but I am sticking to my older version for now.

2.0 out of 5 stars Treeman 10 Nov 2009
Very disappointed. Promised much but very poor on substance. Layout poor and the fact that you cant link people a major and fundamental flaw. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Family Tree Maker 26 Nov 2009
By flem
I am a satisfied user of FTM 10. Since the involvement of Ancestry.com things have gone downhill. FTM10 is simple and uncomplicated. Now ancestry.com want to hook you into their subscription package. I have been doing my genealogy intermitently for over thirty years and have over 1300 names on my database. I dislike the idea of paying a subscription when I am not getting the benefit.

1.0 out of 5 stars Problems 14 Mar 2009
By GerryM
I received FTM as present. It's OK at the basics but has problems (presumably with Vista as it works better on my old PC under XP) which I am still trying to resolve. Really it's a throwback to the bad old days of problems only computer geeks could unravel. The Ancestry.co.uk free trial period was less than advertised on the box (I await their reply to my e-mail on this).

4.0 out of 5 stars Family Tree made easy 9 Mar 2009
This product has a very good set of sample data which once you've finished the entry, will leave you well placed to start setting up your own details. Beware, once you start it becomes obsessive, but this product makes it so much easier, and you can store all manner of details alongside the details of your ancestors.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's good but less than I expected 11 Oct 2009
This is a great piece of software for organising your family tree information but I was expecting a little more from it. I thought that it would have more tools for finding information. It does integrate with ancestry.co.uk very well and importing data from this site is a breeze but the information on relatives after 1909 is a little sparse.

For organising information you already have this is great and very easy to use.

One personal frustration I had was that a newer version was released within a few weeks of buying this which was a little anoying but at least I did get a discount for upgrading. The 3 months free subscription to ancestry.co.uk which thins comes with is also very good.
