Review

'... compact chapters explain the canine mind and offer sound educational strategies to enlighten even accomplished trainers.' - Publishers Weekly. --Publishers Weekly

'John Fisher made an immense and invaluable contribution to the world of dogs and the people who care about them.' - Pat Miller, renowned dog trainer and author. --Pat Miller

Product Description

In this seminal pet psychology book, John Fisher examines the mind of the dog with examples taken from his practical experience, with the aim of explaining to owners how the world appears from a dog's point of view. The first section of the book traces the ancestry and inherent behaviour of dogs, from their origins as pack animals related to the wolf or the jackal. The second part examines what most people describe as problem behaviour, which is just normal canine behaviour exhibited in the wrong place. The book concludes with an A-Z of common problems, their causes and cures. In the 1980s and 1990s John Fisher revolutionised dog training, first in England, then in the US. With his self-deprecating manner and 'Oh! So British' sense of humour he taught us to 'Think Dog'.

Thanks to Pamela Mackinnon s update, today's dog trainer and owner can learn John's positive, rewards-based training and get excellent results with their canine companion.

I have been professionally training dogs for over twenty years and am clearly still learning. This book gives an excellent insight into the dogs mind in clear, easy to understand english. Broken down into three main chapters; What is a dog?, Positive approach to problem behaviours and Problem solving A-Z. It gives the new owner as well as the seasoned professional advice which is really second to none. I just wish I had read this book when I started training.

I was extremely impressed with this book. I want to train to be a dog behavourist and it is this book that has inspired me to do so. I have a young puppy and really wanted to understand how she thinks and this book has been an excellent help. Whether you want to train your own dog or other people's, you NEED this book.

This is a book that is written in a language that everyone can understand. It will start you off on a lifetime of understanding with your best friend! A must.

This book is invaluable for any dog owner, trainer, etc. In fact, anybody who has anything to do with dogs, regardless of how long you've owned/worked with them, will learn something from this. John Fisher understood dogs better than anybody on this planet and I just wish he were still around because he's one person I'd like to spend a day with (if only they still did 'Jim'll Fix It').

Worth a read
This book was well worth reading. It wasn't as big as I thought it might be, but it did have a lot of useful stories.

Not the best, but readable
An easy to read book, which does teach positive re enforcement methods, but way to much dominance theory to be really good. Sorry but not for me, as it is out of date. Read more
